Accessing a mapped drive requires a password
I bought a new PC a few months back and it came loaded with Win XP. I have a router/hub which I have connected my new PC to my old one (running Win 2k). On the new PC I have mapped a drive letter to the old PC. Every time I re-boot my new PC and I try to access the mapped drive a dialog box comes up asking me to log into the old PC. The user name (Admin) comes up in the dialog and the password is blank. If I click OK on the dialog (remember at this point I have not typed a password) the files for the drive show up. Can anyone tell me why my old Win 2k PC needs me to authenticate even though the password is blank? Do I need to change a setting on my Win XP computer or my Win 2K PC?

there is a workaround to this problem.
create a new account on your win2k box thaat is identical to the one you are using on the xp box. That way, whenever w2k goes to verify that you are a valid user, it already has your user/pass in its userbase. Oh, also make that user an administrator if you want to have full access to the share/drive.

Big thanks b4in, this worked like a charm. It was especially handy as I have all my MP3s on the server PC. Every time I would start my MP3 player on my XP machine it would not show the music library until I had logged into the server.
