i am behind a college firewall and would like to start an ftp server. if anyone could help me i would appreciate it very much

If you are behind a firewall, chances are the only people that would be able to access your server would be other people at your university.

Yup, that's how things were at my last college. Me and my college buddies (one of them is on tfp: iktoweya) served up many a files on ftp servers. Great fun that was, although I never found a way around it. And I forgot to ask the local haxor how to do it.

use a port scanner and see if port 21 (the default ftp port is open).

If you're behind a wall, you *may* be able to get away with running the wall on port >1024. but that's only if the admin allows inbound requests.
