Saving pictures in IE? Help!

After my recent re-installationg of WinXP Pro, I've been encountering problems with saving pictures in IE.

When i right click on the picture that i wish to save, and select "save picture as", the windows dialog that pops up prompts me to save it as an untitled.bmp file.

It used to save it as originalfilename.jpg (or whatever format the original picture is in.)

Why is it screwing up??!!!

thanks for any help you guys can give...

how is it screwing up?

is it not saving it at all? or only saving as a bitmap file? or can you not find it once you've saved it?

are you choosing where to save it? or just letting IE put it in whatever folder is the default? I always use the up button to work my way to the desktop and save the picture there. I can then easily find it. later I can move it whereever I want.

it only saves it as a bitmap.
It doesn't even give me an option to save it as a .jpg.

I know my way around XP, and know how to choose where to save it.

But this is very frustrating. I can view jpegs fine in XP though, either through photoshop or through the windows picture viewer. Just can't save it from IE.

I've seen this too, and always thought that it was some fancy method that web sites were using to protect thier images from massive downloads.

No-one wants to convert a bunch of BMP to JPG later on really.

FYI I've seen this on both NT4 and W98 with IE, so it may not be just XP causing the problem.

It's because your cache has filled up. Try emptying out your internet cache, close all your browser windows, then try it again. That should work, I've seen this several times myself.

I_T_man is right. You gots too much smut in your cache. You may also need to close all browser instances after clearing it out. Make sure you do this once a week or so.

This is why CacheSentry is a good program to have (if you're using IE).

When Microsoft answers this question they say to empty the cache (delete temp files), but also to remove bad downloaded program files. To do the last you do this:

Go into IE options, at the temporary internet files sections you click Settings, then click View Objects.
This shows downloaded ActiveX objects. If the status is anything but Installed (unknown, error) you should delete it, ignoring messages.

If you needed a deleted object it will be downloaded again when you need it.

In XP, open IE, click on tools, click on internet options, click advanced, scroll way down and check "empty internet temp files when browser closes" or something very close to that.
