Mobo rec: Nforce2 vs. KT333/KT400
After spending a day fighting with a dead motherboard, I have come to the conclusion that the only way to save my sanity is just to get a new board and be done with it (long story).
Current CPU is an AMD XP1600. Already have a GeForce TI4200 for the video card. Should my my new board use the Nforce2 or KT333 (or Kt400) chipset? It looks like the Nforce2 has better performance across the board, and, if I get a board without onboard video, I won't be wasting money since I already have the (superior) TI4200. Comments? |

A7N8X Deluxe is probably about the best you can get, for about $130. I've got one and it's awesome. Good 5.1 onboard sound, 2 NICs, 4 onboard USB. You can't do much better.

There really is no comparison between NForce2 and KT333/400. NF2 is faster and typically has more goodies on board. If I were to pick an NF2 board, it'd be the Abit NF7-S. Its priced a little lower than the Asus A7N8X Delux, has more goodies, and overclocks better.
However, the new KT600 looks like it may at least be the perfomance equal to NF2, or ever better than NF2. Its still a little early. |

I ordered the KT600, and I've already sent it back to NewEgg. Wouldn't run my Barton 2500+ or my Palomino 1900+ below 70 degrees celsius. I always have bad motherboard luck, but this is pathetic. In other news, I got my girlfriend's KT400 to OC my Barton from 1.8 GHz to 2.1 GHz with a regular CPU fan. They don't suck; they may just not have the potential for extreme overclocking like nforce 2's.
As for chipset versus chipset, I'm still hearing that the nForce 2's are doing better for overall performance. I'm still quite sure that if my KT600 didn't come fucked up, then it'd be OC'ing to at least 2.2 GHz with my Barton in it. Anyway, I RMA'ed the motherboard back to NewEgg and ordered the famous Abit NF7-S, which I hear is possibly the best mobo for OC'ing period. -Lasereth
