Home built TiVo

A frind of mine gave me a computer with linux on it. There is an open source program called Myth TV, http://mythtv.org/

This program basically mimics TiVo but has additional features and its free, no $12.95 a month service fee. I haven't hooked it up yet but I've seen his and it's pretty awsome.

Anyone have any experience with home built TiVo type devices and are they any other programs out there like Myth worth checking out?

I have a windows version using this barebones system:

Got it at newegg for $280, added a proc and some memory I had and bingo! Nice system, good panel on the front.

Volume, track selection, anything really... you can customize it, it also has a remote control. WinAmp and Windows Media are already set up.

Yeah, MythTV is pretty awesome. Another that's not too bad is Freevo

awesome. But how do you hook up the computer to the tv? I have a wintv thingy but the software it uses really sucks and crashes all the time and only works on win98.

Really thinking about switching to a linux. Is there an open source drafting program thats similar to autocad r14 or better?

I believe any of the winTV products are well supported in linux, in the video4linux section of the kernel. Don't have one myself, so I've not gotten to play around with it yet :-)

The Windows XP Media Center Edition is a pretty good choice too, if you can get your hands on it. If you've got a MSDN Universal subscription, you can download it for free for testing purposes from the MSDN Subscriber downloads.

The features of MythTV and the ongoing development effort on it make it a compelling platform, but I think I'll probably wait for a while until it gets to be easier to install and more of the features are implemented.
