need help converting .VOB files

i have a couple of DVDs with raw footage from a videographer. the files are in .VOB format. how can i convert this to mpeg or some other video file format so i can start editing? any good free programs out there? help! thanks.

If I'm right, and chances are I'm not, a VOB file should open up just like any other video file. I think I remember downloading a VOB file once and being able to open it up in my video player without an issue. I don't know if editing is a different story...

You're walking into DVD Ripping waters. Grab a program called GordianKnot (don't have a link) and that'll help you convert the file into a range of different types of video like DivX, Uncompressed RGB, XVid, blah blah blah.

You'll definitely want to check out the site www.dvdrhelp.com - it has several tutorials dealing with the issue you've brought up, and more :D

thanks for the input! :-)

this is my first time ripping from a dvd. the footage is just wedding stuff.... i was trying to edit the footage myself in the movie maker program for XP. but for some reason, although version 1 of Windows Movie Maker (which came with XP) supported VOB files, version 2 doesn't. so now i need to convert the VOB files to something it CAN understand....

for simple conversion from .vob to .mpg or .avi format, the program you want is FlaskMpeg. It is relatively easy to learn and does a good job. just be sure you have all the codecs installed for the formats you want to convert to.

as for editing, there are lots of programs out there that edit mpg/avi files. from what I have seen, its easiest to convert first, then edit.
