Opinion on a laptop

Just wondering if I could get some feedback on a laptop I'm thinking of buying. Its from a Canadian company called TTX. I have one of their monitors which has worked great since the day I bought it. The kicker with this is that I can get it dirt cheap through my school (just over $2500CAN after taxes), but only if I get it through my school. Here's the specs of the one I'm looking at getting:

TTX TL5000 http://db.ttx.ca/notebooks.asp
Intel Centrino @ 1.3Ghz
512MB DDR RAM @ 266Mhz
15" XGA Screen (wish it could be higher :( gonna see if I can get SXGA installed at least)
40GB IDE Hard drive
ATI Mobility RADEON 64MB
S-Video output
48x DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo
Windows XP Pro (nothing spectacular since I'm provided with and a shitload of other software courtesy of my school for a great price)

On top of that, it looks hella sweet. I saw one in person at my the college computer store, and it looks like its built well, runs well too from the limited time I had on it. Just wondering what other people would think of it, or if anyone has used their products and has any opinions on them.

Well, lets see. Its Centrino (not just M) so you have all the benefits of that. Which means a lot of power, and a lot of battery life. Thats a plus. 40 gigs of HD space is really good for a laptop. (I only have 10 gigs :)). Plenty of ram, big enough screen. I think anything bigger than 14 is too huge. DVD/CD-RW good good. XP, eh, too hard to get win2k now isn't it? :D

Heck, that alone is pretty much enough to pay for the 2500canadian/1800Us that you are paying. Getting software on top of that is just good stuff. Looks like a good deal to me. Gotta love universities getting great deals for the students, even though they really limit your choices of manufacturer.

How much does it weigh? That is HUGE for a laptop. Other then the "small" HD IMO it looks like a good laptop that will treat you well.

I have never been a fan of TTX anything. I have played with a couple TTX lappies, and there is a reason they are cheap.

Sorry, you are right, I should have qualified my statement.

I was looking for a laptop for Mrs. Tin, and a friend of mine mentioned TTX. I have had previous experience with the company's monitors, which were rather lousy. A friend and shop-owner who was able to order TTX laptops ordered one in for us to test out, and lent it to us for a couple of days. I don't recall which model, but it definatly wasn't the Centrino. I have also had occasion to look at them for work purposes.

Overall it is just a cheap feeling laptop. The doors protecting the expansion ports will break off if not treated with extreme care. The body and screen seems to have a little flex in them. The screen itself is passable, but not excellent. The keyboard was nasty, too soft for my liking, but that's a personal opinion. I will say I have never had one fall apart on me.

Perhaps I have been jaded by owning nothing except Dell and Apple laptops. This is just my own personal experience with one.

I decided to nix the TTX idea. Sure, it's a helluva lot cheaper than most laptops for its specs, but I don't want to risk having a huge paperweight of a laptop a year from now. Plus, my school's tech support kinda sux (its run by the students that couldn't get decent co-op positions :)) I think I'm gonna go with a Toshiba Satellite 2450-P40 http://www.toshiba.ca/web/specificat...1370&part=1011

The store I checked it at is a dedicated Toshiba reseller, plus they have a better warranty plan, and I have a cousin that works with Toshiba Canada that does repairs (ie free repairs :)).... he couldn't get me a discount though :( The store I might buy it from wants $3099, which is about the average price for the 2450-P40... I'm gonna try to haggle my way into getting a USB key and laptop bag thrown in for good measure. Thanks all for you input though, it was appreciated!

This is a good deal.

What is the warranty?

If you can pay an extra 100 dollars (or so) for an extended warranty (ie, 3 years), I would highly recommend it.

Even with a 12 month warranty, that is a good deal.

Go for it.

Good choice. Toshiba is a pretty good brand, and that model is a nice laptop.

Nooze2k 07-31-2003 09:54 PM

Just bought the Toshiba tonight, glad I made the choice too. Pound for pound (literally), its a much better laptop. Quite impressed with the bundled features and software as well. Only gripe is the video (I'm an ATI fan), however I trust Nvidia's drivers with Linux more, which is a must for school. Plus, having less of a video will just keep me from getting distracted playing games...(but still capable for the OpenGL and Direct3d we'll be doing and all the games I play anyways.... runs UT2k3 like a dream!) Thanks all!
