Red Hat Linux 10 (Severn) and Panther
Hello, just curious to see if there are any linux users on TFP. If so, do you guys have any comments on RH Linux 10. It seems to me that it's gonna be an aggressive attempt at jumping on the desktop.
Now... this is totally off topic but.... The Powermac G5 is a 64 bit processing computer, yet the upcoming release of Panther is a 32 bit OS, it doesn't fully utilize the capabilities of the G5's computing power. Seems rather odd Apple didn't prepare for this =(

Well, there have been a fair number of other threads here recently about Linux/BSD/UNIX users, so yea, there's a fair number of us.
As for the G5 being a 64-bit CPU while OSX only is a 32-bit OS, it's not the first time it's happened. Windows 2000, for example, supported 64-bit memory addressing (allowing it to go up to 8GB of RAM for 2000 Advanced Server, and 32 for Datacenter), and Win2003 server supports even more (512GB RAM for Datacenter 64-bit). Moving an entire user, development, and hardware community to a 64-bit platform takes time - be it Windows, *n?x, or Macintosh. There really isn't a lot you can do to prepare for this, except hope that developers get on the ball and develop for it.

Interesting. I hadn't heard anything about SEVERN before this. I've been using redhat 9.0 and it's pretty good. I really like the idea of Linux and I also enjoy using it from time to time, but for many things Windows just does it faster and better. Its a shame, but true. As soon as Linux does everything as quickly as Windows, I'm reformatting in ext-3.
