What Exactlly is IRC?

Hey all,

what exactly is IRC? is it basiclly a IM program? I have heard alot about IRC but don't know howto get started. Is there a standard program that people use? Is there a free IRC program out there?" can you download stuff off of IRC and how do you locate other people on IRC?

Thanks in advance for any info...

Internet Relay Chat.. basically the oldest chat rooms, you need a client to connect to an IRC server, then you /join #channel whatever.. I'm not an expert but it's not hard to get used to, I would recommend going to www.mirc.com and downloading that client, it's simple.

Definitely read what's in this link. If you want to give IRC a try without downloading any software, you can enter tfp's chat room by clicking this button: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/images/...4/top_chat.gif

What is IRC

Nizzle 07-29-2003 07:33 AM

don't do it! IRC is the biggest timesink known to man and woman. :)

MontanaXVI 07-29-2003 10:09 AM

nizzle got here before i could

irc is a cool concept and the oldes chat rooms around ANYONe just about can get on and chat with anyone else,

however it can be quite addiciting almost no special skills required to use it and it will eat up hours each day either sitting idle as my irc client is ALWAYs online (DALnet nick MADAMN7878 or MontanaXVI) or me blabbing about somethying to someone who will listen

I prefer HydraIRC It has channel monitoring and logging and lots more. Best of all it is free vs $20 for mIRC. Just my 2 cents.

what? you got to pay for Mirc? i've been using that for months

HydraIRC, I have heard of tons of different IRC versions/clients but never Hydra. I will have to check that out. Any special features other than already mentioned ones?

I didn't realise that mIRC cost money. I remember I had it like 3 years ago but got rid of it because I wasn't using it.

I might get back into IRC now because of all of its uses. I might not, because studying is important and I can't allow myself to be distracted by IRC.
