Naming Schemes
Who uses a scheme, when naming computers and/or other networked hardware?
If you use a scheme, I'd be curious to find out what it is... just to see what kind of creativity is out there, and what ideas I can leech for future naming schemes. |

mine are all named after various goddesses. I choose a name that fits the persona of the computer..
for example, my laptop is Hecate, the triple goddess, mainly because i use it in three distinctly different fashions..

At the office (I work for an ISP), we used elements for the server names. It gives us alot of names to work with

I name my computers with names I would never give my children. Consumer level systems get girl names. Pro systems get boy names. If I have named my computer with your name, please don't take offense
iBook: Helen iMac: Molly Powermac G5: Unnamed. Maybe Dave or Vince.

Virtually all of my personal systems are named after a Tool song or album.
At work, I normally work with the machine for a couple weeks or so before rolling it out (except the client machines, those are auto-assigned in many cases) so I name them according to the experience, which is why the first XServe at work was BFM aka Big Fucking Mac. The next one is NFM, Noisy Fucking Mac.

We have servers in two colocation centers. Machines in one center are named after ancient cities ('jericho', 'carthage', 'athens', 'pompeii', etc). The machines in the other center are named after elements ('carbon', 'helium', 'lithium', 'boron').
Each employee gets to name their own desktop, so there's no particular scheme there. My desktop at work is called 'pynchon'. My home computer is named 'barth'. Post-modern American novelists. |

I support lots of different companies... some of my favorites have been sports cars, planets (they ran out of server names), and the Brady kids...
Best account name of all time came from an automated system that used the first initial and up to 5 characters from the last name. It had worked fine for years, until Frank Uckerman called in to get his account set up. My technicians were laughing so hard they couldn't talk to the poor guy on the phone... That account required an override to the account generator. |
