Is it possible to password protect a hard drive in xp?
I got a new computer and I slapped in the hard drive from my old emachine. Now I have been using it for porn and I dont want others in it any ideas? I looked through administrative options but I will admit I am not used to xp. Thanks for any and all replies.

I'm not sure if this still works, but in the old "tweakui"(free microsoft program) you could hide drive letters from showing up in my computer. If this still works, it may help a little...

does anyone know if there is a way to hide/unhide hidden files with a keyboard shortcut? |
You might want to look into converting the drive to NTFS. This has added security benefits you maybe looking for. On the downside, you will no longer be able to access the drive if you put it into a Win98 computer. Read up on it completely first otherwise you might do something you wish you hadn't.

depends how computer literate ppl in your home/how often they use the computer/what they use the computer for.
if its just for net/documents then create another user profile and dont let them have access to the 'nature' drive. or what i do cuz my family is not really computer literate is hide the entire folder. and when i want to access it i just type the location in the address bar. ie h:\warez. |
Darkure: I formatted it to ntfs when I put it in the new pc running xp.
Iam_immigrant: how do I hide the entire folder? It is actually an extra drive that can only be accessed by going into my computer. |
doesnt h:\warez show up in the history?
|
There use to be a good program called "Magic Folders". Haven't seen it in years but a google search might turn it up. It doesn't lock the whole drive just makes a folder completely invisible and password protected.

yes h:\warez will show up. but if your typing in address bar of IE i dont think ppl will click on it. just hope. *fingers crossed* so if you do go this route make sure you name the folder something that only YOU would be interested in. other than that go with what others have said. or like i said make user accounts |
Did you want to hide it, or password protect it? In XP simply goto start, my computer, right click the drive in question, goto "sharing and security", follow the directions to password protect that folder (drive).

You can keep anyone but you from accessing the hard drive with DriveCrypt. These are the guys the military use.
