Commodore 64
Looks like the classic "gaming system" is coming back. My question how many people would really buy this comp and games for it?? I think its cool, but I would live with an emulator on a pc.

There's always money in nostalgia.
|
Actually, I hear that they are doing a heck of a lot with them. I'm part of a group of people(I joined for another reason) that still create programs for the C64. It's kinda nifty, but I don't think I could get into it.
|
Depending on price i would probably buy it. They should package the system with all 6000 games. Even better would be to build a set of the games into a slick stick like they did with the Atari games and joystick.
|
I still have my C Vic120, its awesome its like before all this coloir and stuff :). I would even consider buying an amiga (sp?) so i could pull out my super old progs and see if they still work.
|
Alot of people are still using the sound generaters in them for musical purposes... I forget what the chip was.
|
tinfoil: Its the SID chip.
I wouldn't buy one, but that's because I already have one out in my garage :) Actually, the C64 was very popular overseas long after it faded from popularity in the states. However, sounds like some PHB got ahold of some odd statistic ("6 million Commodore users") and decided that there would be a great market for the old machine. |
w00t i still have a c64, and still play games on it!

I've got one sitting under my bed at my parents house, it doesn't like to boot up first time though, I have to flip the switch like 5000 times in 3 seconds to get it to work.
|
i have one, I never played it because I got it from my grandpa and havent hooked it up yet :o
|
Got rid of mine when i was younger :(
Tho I would always play it when I went to my grandparents :):) My favorite game.. tho the name eludes me, the one where there were little tokens on the map and you were a little guy that had to run to all of them. Once you got past the easy lvls.. you would have balls of fire to dodge... enemies to beat.. and even the infamous invisible level!!! :D Do you remember what that one was called? |
I still have my old 64 sitting in the closet, last time i checked it still worked. Hmm makes me want to pull the bastard out.
|
Mail Order Monsters, Star Rank Boxing, TAC, Morpheus, etc... all took up thousands of hours of my time. Probably close to the time i dumped into everquest. (Thank God i stopped that) !
6million in use though? GTFO ! |
omg, and The Last Ninja...how could i forget that one?
|
I Loved my C64
I use to subscribe to RUN magizine ( i think that is what it was called) still have a few issues in my folks attic and so is the C64 i think....
Does anyone remember a Game called "M.U.L.E."? It was a game where you picked an alien race and had to build a colony. And each race was good at something... IE mining, farming and such. I loved that game and would love to get a copy of it for a windows emulator or something. DB |
I remember M.U.L.E.... there's a couple of remakes on the net of it actually, don't remember the actual links though for them. Spent hours playing it, although it wasn't my fav. The games that probably ate up most of my time on a C64 were Rocket Ranger, Karateka, the Beach Head series,... actually, there were so many games I can't even remember them all. I just remember having hundreds upon hundreds of disks, many of them with 10-20 games on them each, if not more. And they say piracy is rampant now! Back then, almost every game everyone had was copied from someone.

Still looking for M.U.L.E.
still looking for M.U.L.E.!!!
This discussion brought back the urge to play it again. Anyone got a version of this that will work with XP? or know where is should look for one? Thanks DB |
I'll stick with my actual Commodore computers. I've been meaning to pull that out and play some old games on it. I used to love Rockey's Boots and Ducks Ahoy! Fun games, at least, back when I was a kid.
|
DonnieBoy: I loved Run magazine :) I learned a lot about programming on my C64, and Run magazine helped with that, as did Compute! magazine. Anyone ever read that? Both would have machine code for some game that you could type in with their loader they had printed up. After a few hours of mind-numbing hex entries, you had a game you could play. Loved it.
For any of the programmers out there, ever see the Transactor magazine? |
I have not one but two C64/128 machines--one still new in the box, if anyones interested. Seems to me a little like wanting to go back to black and white TV or hi-fi stereo though.
|
I have an old C64, but it doesn't work anymore. opened it up to take a look, and it had started to corrode. I don't even know if you can get them repaired anymore
souzafone: is it the 128 that is still new in box? |
Anyone else have the SX-64? Commodore's attempt at "mobile" computing... it was a suitcase computer, similar in size and shape to an old Osbourne. It had a little 5 inch screen and the 1541 built into the front of the main unit... very cool little unit.
|
I'm sure my old C64 and my ton o' games are still at my parents. There was a game called Pirates, I used to play that thing for hours upon hours. The good ole days eh?
|
the emulators are pretty buggy, at least that i've messed with. the most amusing thing is they emulate 1541's so precise that it sometimes takes 10 minutes to load a game.
|
I used to pick up Transactor as often as i could but it was hard to get hold off at least til the web
http://cbm.csbruce.com/~csbruce/cbm/transactor/ I used to work for a games house in the UIK that used SX64s for their accounting dept, very amusing stuff. MULE was interesting, almost as characteristic as the person who created it, who sadly died a few years ago. |
I have an old c128 i havent unboxed in years. Ill have to see if it still works. back from the days when graphix were sucky so the games had to be good.
|
Ahhhh yes, the Commodore 64..
I remember spending most of time playing P.O.W, Paperboy and 1942 :D
Good times. P.S. International Karate+, anyone? |
Oh man, I wish I still had my Commydore. Good times, good times. Like in the mid-90s a friend of my sister was cleaning out her old room at her parents' house before they moved, and found *her* old C64 and stuff in the closet. Of course I jumped all over that. Had tons of fun for about five months until I forgot to turn the system off before switching the plugstrip back on. Zzzzzt. Guess the old circuitry couldn't handle the sudden burst of electricity.
Dude, Pirates! rocked the casbah. All those old MicroProse games did. I tried downloading a copy of that for the PC, but it only ran in 640X480 with 16 colors, and it ran so fast the ship just SPUN in circles if you tried sailing anywhere. I would totally buy one today, if they put them out. Of course, I have no idea where my games/joysticks are, but I'd be willing to dig them out if I had something to play them on. |
