The Longhorn Project
Ladies and Gentlemen, does anyone have any information about MS's so-called Longhorn Project.
From what I had read it's supposed to be a new version of Windows that is NOT backwards compatable. Sort of a whole new build from the ground up. Hopefully, this will eliminate all the bloat and vulnerablities of the current Windows line (95a,95b,95c,98,98se,NT... etc, ad naseum). And lets just get this out of the way...."M$ Sucks! Bill Gates is the Devil! They RIPPED off Mac!.... and such and such.

man, from what i saw on neowin.net a couple months back it just looked like a "second edition" XP.... except for that nifty sidebar!!!! *sarcasm*...
i thought it was hilarious when steve jobs did a sneak peak at longhorn during his WWDC 2003 keynote. i was laughing my ass off. i think the key feature in longhorn is supposed to be WinFS. other than that, it just looks like XP.

Here's a FAQ on Longhorn, written by a guy named Paul Thurott. He's a little cocky, but his articles are generally very well written!

steve jobs did a sneak peak at longhorn? That's absolutely hilarious - I'd love to see that. The last screenshot I saw of the Longhorn login screen was a direct rip off Mac. It's sad really.

Im content with XP. It does its job and really don't see anything impressive in it. I really hate that side bar, whats the point in a huge clock? Im not going to update unless I need to, and dell supports the update.

anyway, not a whole lot about what IS in longhorn is public yet as the OS is a good 1.5 years away (sans delays). What is new is the above mentioned Sidebar with the overgrown clock. And it is supposed to have a new file system that would be alot like BFS (database like, this is cool), but it appears it will not be a new FS instaed a layer on top of NTFS. (random story I saw on slashdot a few weeks back). So like .NET and other things, just wait for a finished product (or at least coming close). |

There's a leaked/released (not sure) version of Longhorn out. It's very beta, and I do have it but I've never bothered to install it. It'd be too much work. :-P It can be found on most p2p programs, though.

you have to be familiar with how developers do their testing to see what 4015 is,, beta of longhorn is still aways to go.
typically new features are added to the exisiting cpodebase just to see how it looks, its a tech preview not a release of the OS. |

I don;t think no matter how many great features it has that it will be any less bloated. It is that whole WINTEL monopoly. Make it more bloated so that they need more hardware to run it.

about the steve jobs sneak peek... it's on apple's site as part of his WWDC 2003 keynote. he doesn't show any actual screenshots, but he does this bit about where apple is with panther in comparison to what the competitors (m$) have and where they are with it.... it's really funny. i wish i could tell you exactly where it is in his keynote, but i see any time code. but if you scroll to about 40%, steve starts talking about "we know where we'll be in 2003...." that's where it is.
