Upgrading to XP, need advice
Ok, I want to upgrade from 98se to XP Pro. Can I do this without losing my data? (i.e., Fdisking, Formating, etc)

yeah, you can install windowsxp from scratch into it's own folder, and but don't format the drive.
Convert the drive to ntfs though.

no need to lose data...
whenever i reformat/reinstall (which is oh every 3-6 months) i copy My Documents and my Favorites to somewhere safe (ie another partition) and whatever else i want to save from program files (irc logs, flashfxp stuff...) sure its a pain in the ass to reinstall all the progs again and reconfig to your liking..but it's worth it. and the more you do it, the easier it gets. just take a pen and paper and make a list of what you'd need to do so you can keep track of it better. and good luck!

A fresh install is always the best way to go, however if you are dead set on upgrading instead of formatting you can do that as well and as long as your 98 is running well it's actually pretty painless.
Had to do that to the boss' computer here. He didn't want to reformat and reinstall so had to upgrade. It has worked well for him, but then again, he isn't installing all kinds of crap on his machine either. |
