PC Just shut down on me!
 

i was surfin the tfp and all of a sudden the thing just went off and rebooted.

so, i'm all paranoid and i go look in the bios and i see that the cpu temp is about 107-109 degress and there is an option to shut down pc when temp reaches 110 (but this option is disabled though). (it's an athlon xp 2000+ and it's got the fan and heat sink that came in the retail box).

i built this pc pretty recently, so i dont think it's enough time for the psu to go bad.

now, i get a 'windows has just recovered from a serious error' the next time i booted up.

what could be going wrong here?

What else do you have on your computer? Massive video card, lots of drives? It could just be the temp, so you might want to look into more cooling options. Is this the first time it happened? I'd also crack open the case and check the connections on everything, make sure everything is securely connected. The only times I've seen this is when the mother board or the RAM goes bad.

Try more fans and see what you get first. :)

i got 3 case fans going. i'll add some more soon.
i'm lookin @ the temp right now and it's around 45C and the danger is @ 80 C

do you have 'reboot on a BSOD' checked? (it's on by default), the heat might have fucked something and it went down cauing the reboot.

Well Dude, sorry your machine dumped on you. An Athlon 2000 is 1.67 isn't it? What board is it on? What PS are you using. You know the drill bud!

as for the psu, i dont know the name, it came w/ the case.


anyway, it hasnt happened since, so i'm hoping it's an isolated deal and may never happen again.

well as the processor overheats, youre gonna lockup and crash, and unless you change it, XP reboots automatically on a crash (no bsod - i think). clear out all the dust in your case, make sure all fans are actually working, and the heatsink is connected properly to the processor.

well, the temp's (both proc and case) are way below the danger limit.

Well if it is in deg F, then you should be fine for the temps, and you might want to look at your RAM, it might be bad. However if those temps were in C, then I suggest you reseat (Take it out and redo everything, take off the factory Thermal Pad and replace it with some Artic Silver 3) your proc ASAP. Also you should look into getting a good heatsink and fan.

Oh when you take the proc out take a look on it and make sure nothing was seriously damaged.

my fault in puttin the temp's in the different measurements.

the thing is, i got the earlier measurements from bios, which only shows it in F's, and my gigabyte manager program only displays it in c's.

temp currently

cpu = 45c
system = 36c

Those temps are fine, you shouldn't have an issue with your system restarting. Check the ram if you have 2 sticks, take out one and see if it still reboots, if it doesnt then you know its the ram

It's probably XP rebooting instead of bluescreening.

can anyone tell me why my bios has an option to reboot the pc if cpu temp reaches 110 F ?

Well I would imagen that it would increase the life of your system if it was under 45 (around 110) degs, but the way most people change processors you dont plan on having the same one working perfectly for 10 years so you should be fine anyway. My P4 is running at a almost constant 47-49 because of all my HDDs, I could care less.

I would take a look at the bios and try and change that setting to 55 (130) or 60 (140) those are the temps I would start to get worried about and if you have half decent case cooling you should never reach those levels anyway.

I agree that 110degs is just FAR too low for a shutdown temp.

Check again. If you have a gigabyte board, you should be able to specify the temp to shut down and the temp to alarm on. You can on all 4 of the (different model) gigabytes I've got.
