Dial-up
i've posted once about this without results. so i guess i'll try again.
DSL and Cable arent available to me in my area. Satellites a bit on the expensive side. Is there anything i can get to replace dial-up that wont smash my wallet or is there anything i can download to speed this unbearable connection up a bit? |
I don't know if you have tried this yet but I would install the Firefox browser and use the NoScript and AdBlockPlus add ons. The NoScript and AdBlockPlus addons prevent extra crap on some webpages from downloading (Scripts, flash ads, banners ads, etc.) and helps get it so just the content you want on a webpage loads. Also it's been a while since I used it but the Flashblock extension prevents Flash content from loading unless you specifically click on the Flash area and request it loads. That should help with those websites that think it is a good idea to put a flash video off to the side on their main page. These won't help with downloading large files, images or video unfortunately but it might help ordinary web browsing be more bearable. And yes I know it will take an hour on dialup just to download these items but I do think it will help.
Firefox Mozilla | Firefox web browser & Thunderbird email client NoScript https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722 AdBlock Plus https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865 Flashblock https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433 |
well, ive got firefox and adblock. ill give those other two a shot.
thanks for the tips. |
noscript will help. Flashblock is handy too, but noscript is going to make the biggest difference.
In terms of your connection, the big upcoming technology for rural internet is WiMAX. Deployments are happening across Canada and the US right now as well as overseas -- the big name that's stealing a lot of headlines for US wireless internet is Clearwire. You can check availability, but I'd try to avoid any sort of contract with them if you can; they haven't exactly been getting good reviews. Still, as long as you can get a signal it has to be better than dial-up. A word of caution -- WiMAX is a near-LOS technology. If you're in a place that's relatively flat you may be able to pick up a signal from a tower several kilometers away, but if there's a lot of trees or hills surrounding you you might not get anything at all. |
well, im in a very wooded, hilly place. fuck me.
thnx for the help so far. |
