Hey there, if you are out there war driving or warXing in general. What do you use for software?

I have tried a few differant programs, but the main problem is that i do not have an orinco(sp?) card. I do have a Dlink airplus 650. If you know of great software let me know.

If you are new to war-ing or wifi drop me a line i can give you a few awesome sites, I am almost sure there is an access point near you :)

If you know anyone who has a company or maybe a resturant, talk to them about adding wireless, its really simple and very cheap.

Actually I have tried it a few times on my TiBook, but this is a small town with a relativly tech-ignorant population so it is pretty much useless. I only found a single open AP

I've done some wardriving in Dayton where my folks live. I found quite a few access points but I've never really gone searching for them and taking down their locations. That and my brother just drives too damn fast.

My card is a mini-PCI Truemobile 1180 in my Dell Inspiron 5100. Its pretty damn nice because the antenna's are located in the sides of the LCD so I get good reception and nothing sticking out of my laptop.

When I'm looking for hotspots I use a program called Network Stumbler. It'll immediately tell you all you need to know to either connect to the network or start looking for a new one without WEP turned on. If you have a GPS attached to your computer it'll even map the coordinates of the hotspots you run across. I'd like to get one for car trips but they're a little pricey.

I dunno, wardriving just doesn't really appeal to me. I go to a college that has about 1/4 of all the buildings on campus equipped with hotspots.

I do when I am bored. I'll just pop out my iBook and start walking. I can usually pick up a few networks.

No that was not me, I have an antenna so i can be pretty far away.

And its not about stealing internet, I am mainly looking at making wifi more common. So that if you need directions to someplace or what not you can open your laptop and grab them.

Well lets Put aside thinking that an insurance company would open any part of its network up. But a resturant might, and they could easily put in a cable modem or DSL as the AP, rather than hooking up to thier network. So no reason to encode anything, since its a standard internet connection. Its really common in San Fran area, and even Mcdonalds is getting on the bandwagon with wifi in select locations. And if mcD's says this wifi thing works, lets put it everywhere, then wardriving would be obsolete.

why bother?

just look up the ones that people have posted....in NYC there are parks that have free wireless access for anyone.

I have heard of those, but never been there, places like NYC, Sanf Fran and Seatle are light years ahead of the rest. Its hard to find an AP in Dallas or Houston. They are much less likey to have open access.

i believe there are none in vegas.. at least no public ones..
the starbucks out here dont have wifi access or anything..
(that's CRAAZY); even the starbucks back at Purdue had access..

But your in vegas, I would be gambling to much to care about internet access :) I miss vegas already.

I am pretty sure that all starbucks are supposed to have wifi, e-mail the corp office and see if they can mucle around the local owner. But it might be at participating locations only.

I can sit at my desk in lower Manhatten and connect to 2 or 3 open APs that people leave around. One is named "free bandwith" so I guess they meant to do so.

You can literally war-walk in NYC, in addition to the places like Bryant Park (behind main branch NYC public library, 10 blocks south of Times Sq) or later this year the parks down near the WTC on the south end of the island.

I like a certain Starbucks where if you sit at the right table in the back you can pick up some guys open AP and not have to pay Starbucks for it. :)

My small hometown of 2,000 people in the middle of no-where nebraska offers wireless internet services...cheapest in the country at only $25.00 per month, totally unencrypted and free to anybody who wants to use it...however they have QOS server side running to the AP's so if they don't have your MAC address on file then you don't get full bandwidth, but it's still free. People think that only large cities have wireless, but in all actuality it is more and more common in small america because it is cheap and easy and you don't have to mess with the local telco monopoly

You people have it all wrong! The topic is "wardiving" not wardriving.

It's been a real challenge finding a waterproof container for my laptop at 100 feet down. The hot spots are few and far between - mostly in the harbor.
