How the hell does this work?

I'm curious.
What all is involved in making this?
If you refresh, it changes the last line.

BuDDaH 07-02-2003 02:58 PM

yup, it does..

N I C E...

07-02-2003 03:30 PM

holy crap, it told me I was a 'left handed lesbian eskimo' using Mozilla/Netscrape 5.

that's way off... I'm using Mozilla 1.4!

viveleroi0 07-02-2003 03:36 PM

Well Netscape is based off of Mozilla. It is giving you the version of netscape, not the version of Mozilla.

Anyway, I know that images can be created dynamically using PHP, but I have never seen it setup to link directly to the image like that, that's weird.

Redirect 07-02-2003 03:39 PM

purdy kool, xcept when i refreshed it change from IE6 to Nutscrape 5 ???????????????

bannet 07-02-2003 03:58 PM

Said ie6 but im in opera guess it fooled it

drawerfixer 07-02-2003 04:13 PM

I take it Safari is based off Mozilla?

Realizm 07-02-2003 04:20 PM

Can't you set certain file names / extensions to alias to different file extensions? Like maybe .jpg there is set to be the extension for php files.

juanvaldes 07-02-2003 05:25 PM

It's just reading the information your browser sends out (user agent string etc) but I dont' know how its' done.

I first saw it surfing around and tripped when I saw it WAS my IP in someones sig. Pretty cool however they do it.

heyal256 07-02-2003 05:40 PM

I don't know what goes into programming that, but i have seen numerous popups that show the same information "click here to scan your computer for vulnerabilities".
I know that the server can report the ip you are coming from and the OS/browser version is from the user agent string (as Juanvaldes mentioned).
My best guess is that the picture has the text dynamically rendered upon request. Either way, that is very cool.

Xirax 07-02-2003 07:35 PM

It's not a fan of opera i see

The_Dude 07-02-2003 07:55 PM

i know you can get the info thru javascript, but it doesnt look like they're using it here.

how they hell are they compiling it as a pic??

that's amazing....

Realizm 07-02-2003 08:11 PM

They keep it a secret, as you'll see. My bet is if you pay for their software..

Halx 07-02-2003 08:18 PM

the secret is mod_rewrite
there is no file called http://www.danasoft.com/vipersig.jpg
the server takes that specific file request and redirects it to a PHP file that draws up that image instead.

*bow*

Realizm 07-02-2003 08:22 PM

I was just about to post that, damnit. :-(

http://www.zend.com/zend/tut/dynamic.php

I didn't know mod_rewrite what it is called though. I just realized that's what's happening.

Here's the mod_rewrite page:

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_rewrite.html

[also]

If you'll notice, it's not a jpg, it's a PNG. You can also put any number of letters/characters/whatever after the jpg and it will work.

MacGnG 07-02-2003 09:44 PM

it's perl/cgi script (probly), interesting, good script, difficult.

make your own

mpedrummer2 07-02-2003 10:33 PM

Might even be the same IP, merker...maybe you're schitzophrenic and writing code.

BoCo 07-03-2003 04:57 AM

Freaky shit, dude. Get your ass in gear and find out how to do it.

Check your Opera settings. Most people seem to leave it as "Identify Opera as Internet Explorer".

The dave 07-03-2003 07:19 PM

billcollins 07-03-2003 07:23 PM

Realizm posted a link with a tutorial.

poof 07-04-2003 08:06 AM

Halx, is that program doohickie like iframe?

big_bubba 07-04-2003 12:25 PM

Nope, iframe is a client side object, mod_rewrite is a server side event. You've got to have a server to play with to be able to configure something like that.

Great effect though, I'd love to learn how to do that also, it'll help me with something else less intrusive....

poof 07-05-2003 12:01 AM

appreciate the feedback <b>gigawatz</b> . You sound like you know your stuff. I always respect that in a person. Thanks again.

macmanmike6100 07-05-2003 02:10 AM

if you view the source of the page, I'm sure you'll be able to find out how. However, this won't help if they create the graphic server-side (which is, actually, what I think is more probable)

guthmund 09-08-2003 12:18 AM

Does anybody know anything about this???

SM70 EDIT: MERGED

I know I've seen this around on other websites and such.

I just now decided to find out a little more about it.

http://www.danasoft.com/sig/bestofriderbob.jpg

does anybody have the code for this???

The website danasoft.com only allows for you to link to a picture whereas I want the nuts and bolts.

I just thought it was interesting.

MahlerIsGod 09-08-2003 12:55 AM

Shocking! They must be incredibly accurate. Windows XP and IE 6!(Sigh) That's like a psychic telling you she is getting an image of someone you know who has feet and that at some point in your life you've been near water. Personally, I wouldn't put much credibility into it.

um...it's not the pictures fault you use the typical software ;) It was right on with me as well - Linux and Mozilla. I'm curious as to how this works as well. Perhaps the link that you use for the picture is dynamic somehow and depending on the identification it leads to a proper pic? *shrug* Been quite awhile since I've poked around in web code.

sakvee 09-08-2003 04:13 AM

Check this page, it has a heap of javascript for displaying users browser, ip, etc.

Javacript

henlin 09-08-2003 04:51 AM

it does pick up what you're using, i've just told opera to id as IE 6 and it changed to IE 6 from opera. Quite a nice idea

charliex 09-08-2003 09:38 AM

its usually done with GD and PHP , there was a thread on this a few weeks ago.
