convert thunderbird to gmail
I have a ton of old emails going back a few years from a number of email sources all in thunderbird. I am anal about sorting that everyperson has their own folder, etc... I do want to try to upload all my old mail into my gmail account see if I like their system, and hopefully fully migrate to gmail.
Only problem is I am unsure how to go about doing this, so any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. |
Email clients like Thunderbird aren't really designed to put stuff back on the mailserver, which is what GMail is from Thunderbird's point of view. The easiest way to do what you want to do is just to forward all of the emails you want to keep to your GMail account.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think if you set Thunderbird to connect to gMail through IMAP you should be able upload the message folders; although you might need to do one folder at time depending on how large they are. This would allow you to keep the original received dates as well as the original senders for each email which would be lost if they were forwarded.
Found this article about imap importing to gmail, one poster had 27,000 emails that they were able to transfer, although it looks like with some aggrivation |
Thank you, I am trying out the imap thing now, will report back how it works.
