quicker XP logon - just enter pass - how?
I've recently had to add password protection to my LAN.
(someone else is temporarily sharing my router for internet) All three of my computers use the same user and pass. There are no other users, not even guest. Two run Win XP pro the other Win XP Home. On one machine (Win XP Pro) at logon the welcome screen waits for me to input the password. I want the other machines to do this instead of my having to use the mouse to select the only user presented for me to select. I have tried to Google this (admittedly very minor problem/annoyance) fix but found no mention anywhere. Have any of you dealt with this or remember a solution? Thanks for your time considering this. |
I googled "XP automatic login" and came up with a couple of things. Here's the most concise:
How do I turn on automatic logon xp feature? - XP Maximized and here's one from MS: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315231 but it is a registry hack. I'm on a domain here at work so I can't really try it out. Doug |
I believe the Microsoft tool TweakUI has that somewhere in the program too, if you're skiddish about modifying the registry yourself.

I don't think auto logon is what I want. I still want to use a password.
I will check the links though. Thank you. Edit: No, auto logon is not what I'm after. I just want the welcome screen to prompt me for a password without having to select a user first. One machine is doing this. |
Do you have Fast User Switching enabled on the problem computer?
I think it's under something like: Control Panel --> Users --> "Change the way users log on and off" If it's on or checked you should turn it off. |
Bingo! Thank you, vanblah.
Also had to turn off Welcome screen. This was not necessary on the first machine. Still a little mystery here. It must be a matter of changing one reg. number...somewhere. |
