Server Remote App

I wanted to make a Terminal Server for office applications for my office.

So I DLed a 60day trial of windows small business 2008.

And installed it on a gaming box of mine. Its nothing special.

Specs: AMD 64 3200+ processor
1gig ram
160gig 7200 rpm ide HD.

Now I would like to make it run faster. I have 3-4 people loged onto stuff like quickbooks and I want it to run smoother and faster.

Do I need to buy a server to make it run better?

Or would something like more ram and faster HD do the trick?

Adding more memory will probable make the most diffrence. How much depends on the OS (32 vs 64 bit). Adding a second HD could give some performance gain if configured properly, so disk access is distributed evenly. Raid might even be an option.
That said, upgrading this machine will never give you the benefits of having a true server hardware. So it all comes down to the budget and requirements.

My biggest concern about using the current hardware would be HD related. Speed and data integrity.

Configure the OS for terminalserver duty will improve it aswell.

Best of luck

What Zweiblumen said.......further, memory would have the biggest immediate impact on your current system...esp running Term Srvr Apps, etc. add a bunch!

Good Luck!

What do you mean Data integrity? Is something I am doing making it more of a chance to loss of data?

Also not sure what you mean configuring the OS for Terminal Server Duty.

Right now the budget is low. So ram and a HD change would be about all I can do right now.

Well I just read up on the Mobo I used and it supports 2gb of Ram MAX. So now I am thinking I need to get a new Mobo so I can run 4gbs of ram like I planned. But If im going to do all that I might as well pick up a used server.

I work with a lot of the Proliant servers at work and they work well. Only problems I've had with them is the occasional HDD needing to be replaced

I think for now I am going to stick with my setup. With maybe a slight ram upgrade and maybe a another HD.

I have a nother question. I have a T5710 Thin client I would like to hook up to the server. I would like to run the Thin client as just a Terminal. IDK if its possiable but I would like to run the entire desktop on the server and just login to the server when I turn the Thin client on. I am unsure of how to do this. I could just have it bootup windows xpe and run remote desktop. But I would rather it just turn on and show me a login screen and that logs into the server. If anyone has any suggestions then that would be great.

Also I would like to upgrade this Thin client to Remote desktop 6.1 so I can run remote app if wanted. But I cant figure out how to do this.

Do thin clients usually have no right click?
