Photo Database Software
I'm trying to find some software that will organise my photos. I've searched Download.com and there are some good sorting programs, but not exactly what I'm looking for.
I want to be able to attach info to photos that can then be searched, by person, place, time, etc. Kind of a cross between iTunes and Facebook I suppose. If anybody knows of anything like this I'd appreciate it. :) I'm running Windows XP |
Google's Picasa app might be what you're looking for. It also integrates with their online photo album service, for sharing with others.
I personally use Flickr. |
I have Picasa, it's good for viewing photos and theres a good collage making tool, but it won't let you add extra info about the photo content.

I know that www.collectorz.com makes a photo collection software but I am not familiar with how it works or how good. I can vouch for their movie collections software though, it is awesome.
As for Picasa can't you tag a photo thus allowing you to enter whatever tags you want, then when you search for that tag it would pull up anything with that tag? You could date something, and tag it with Mom so if you search for either of those that image would come up. |
I used to use ACDSee on my old comp. I liked it alot, it was an early virsion that was pritty bare bones but I thought it was perfect for my needs. it wont seem to install on my XP comp.

I also found it has a batch-renaming tool, which was just what I needed since none of the MS alternatives I encountered had the feature. |
Something as simple as Windows Live Photo Gallery will do what you ask. It's free and part of the Windows Live package.

Another vote for Picasa!
I got it for it's ability to resize a whole folder of images easily... then upload all those images to an online web album. I took 3,000+ pictures while traveling in Peru and without Picasa this would of taken ages... then, once online, i was able to geo tag all my photos. pretty cool! -----Added 3/12/2008 at 04 : 28 : 55----- PS - my only gripe with the program is that instead of a standard scroll bar on the side like every other windows & mac program I've ever used, which allows you to quickly drag to the bottom or middle of a large folder, it has this thing that will only allow you to scroll. kind of frustrating when browsing a folder with hundreds of pictures in it. |
Docbungle’s right. . .if you’re just looking for a simple photo program that’ll let you organize your photos using multiple descriptive and searchable tags, Windows Live Photo Gallery should work pretty well for you. You can apply multiple tags to all your photos, which gives you multiple ways to find them later. You can also use it to quickly upload your pictures to online photo sharing sites, like Flickr.
Here’s a link to a quick overview of the software: getdotlivedotcom/photogallery/overview. I thought this page was pretty interesting as well, where someone who has used both Picasa and Live Photo Gallery does a side-by-side comparison of the two: labnoldotblogspotdotcom/2007/09/google-picasa-or-windows-live-photodothtml. I hope these links were useful, or at the very least, interesting! Thanks, Cody Windows Media Outreach Team |
