Enabling Q Fan in BIOS killed my PC...suggestions?
 

As stated in my last thread in here, my computer fans are LOUD. Very. Loud.
Loud as in, a set of headphones on max won't drown out the buzz on that bitch.
-_- It's annoying, like a mini monster machine.

I've got two fans in the front sucking cold air in, and keeping my HDD nice and cool ^_^
I've got one fan on the side of the case, pushing out hot air.
I've got the CPU fan (duh), and two video cards with a SLi Bridge, so there's the two video card fans (and they're massive)
Aaaand, lastly, a fan on the back of the case pushing out more hot air.

You'd think with all those fans, and just a dual core processor, those fans wouldn't buzz the way they do. But, I think its because my room is a hot-spot in the house.

The fans (or maybe its just one fan! I'm not sure) buzz when I've got a game running, a couple programs running, and sometimes its buzzing during the day when I'm not around and the PC is locked up.

So, I get home tonight, turn 'er on, and run into some software problems, the PC immediately freezes, and reboots. Upon that reboot, I get another freeze before even logging in. -_- Not a good start.

I try again, get into the BIOS, read the POST status, everything looks ok... I decide while I'm there to enable Q fan in BIOS, and check the status of everything else...I save and reboot....and get the BSOD....loooovely! :confused: :sad:

I reboot again, no POST beeps...and the monitor goes in standby mode.
I try a couple more times...nope....she's dead. I killed her. :(

The BSOD said it was a hardware issue...no details...I didn't catch the STOP code it listed in time... damn thing flashed on screen then went black quickly.

Before you ask, three of the case fans are 3-pin connectors.

I MIGHT have to double check the processor fan's pin location... maybe that's my only problem. I believe when enabling Q fan it has to be in a different location?! :confused:

I'd LOVE any advice/suggestions you have. As soon as possible. :) My essays are on that PC, and are due this week!

Regardless, I find it hard to believe that enabling Q fan would kill the PC the way it did.
I have a D-link Wireless G adapter in the computer that's been giving me software issues upon logging in, nothing a simple reinstall can't fix.

So what could have gone wrong?!

I'm skeptical of Q-Fan being the issue.

Software problems are often caused by underlying hardware issues.

The lack of POST beeps leads me to believe your motherboard is a paperweight. I hope it's still under warranty.

take out all RAM and leave one stick in. try all of your pieces independently and see if you can get a POST. I doubt this is the fans.

Martian - my mobo is an Asus M2N-32 Sli Deluxe Wireless. It was top of the line about two years ago.
It does have some strange "sensitivities" towards RAM, the list of RAM that works for the mobo is small.

*shrugs* I don't know, maybe it is the mobo.

Try resetting the BIOS to factory defaults by jumping the BIOS reset pin.

If the that doesn't work remove everything but the processor and see if it posts. If it does then add hardware and try again until you figure out which hardware is stopping the POST tests.

It has been suggested that my power supply is defective. I have a tech analyst confirming this.
If that's the case, whoohoo! warranty covers it. :)
And I'll just need a new one.

Well I didn't find out until today what the deal was, and to be honest, I'm pissed off at their answer.
They did the exact same thing I did last time the POST was non-existent....I pulled the PC apart and started from scratch. They tested everything, said it all worked fine, rebuilt my PC, and the POST works.
I told them that last time this happened I did that very same thing, and had the POST work. But this is the second time within 6 months that my computer has done this...something is not fully compatible I think.
I'll go in tomorrow morning and see what else they have to say. I'm sure I should get a new power supply. I should upgrade it anyways...my PC should be running an 800W or higher I think.

Tried updating the BIOS yet?

BIOS is updated :)

800W is most likely overkill. With a good brand like Antec, Seasonic or FSP between 400 and 500W should be quite enough.
