PSP mods/hacks etc.

hey all...curious about getting a PSP. I have some questions maybe some of you have thoughts to share ?

how's the wifi range ?

has anyone here tried installing WinXP on a PSP ? can it run regular XP apps ?

has anyone tried setting up the PSP to run PS1 games ? I'd like to run Gran Turismo and Doom....maybe Quake too but not shure how that'd work w/o a mouse/keyboard. if I can get my PS1 games on a PSP it'd be pritty great.

I've been looking at PSP mods on uTube and it seems like a cool device. I'm just looking for reasons to go for it or not, so expansion of it's capabilities is a plus.

how would you rate a PSP vs a iPod touch for web browsing ? or watching a movie ?

Seriously? in case yes, then No. I have been out of the mod scene for a while, but I can still confidently say that the PSP is not, has never been, and will never be capable of running Windows XP.

I dunno about getting *your* PS1 games to run on a psp, but it generally seems play most PS1 games somewhat decently if you can find or create ISO's of them. I'd check the compatibility list before you buy it for a specific game, I know some don't work.

for movie watching and web browsing? iPod touch for sure, by a mile. Web browsing on the PSP is annoying, and don't forget that you'll have to be buying a large storage card to get up to the iPod Touch's built-in capacity.

Yeah the only mod I've done to my PSP is the paperweight conversion.

Beautiful screen, underwhelming performance.

I use mine primarily to play Lumines. I regret nothing.

Mine plays everything from Commondore to PS1 games and more. Don't use the internet on it, so I don't know.

What I do know is that watching a movie on a PSP is better than on iPod touch. The screen is excellent for that.

hey thanks for the replys. I was looking at PSP games and I think I can see enough to make it worth my while even un modded. but I'd still like to open it's capabilities some.

not suprised about the web browsing.

Manic, there is un-bricking tutorials on uTube if you want to look.

I feel like I want a new toy. but I didn't want to join a PSP board just to ask a question ot two.

anyone have a slim they've watched on a big lcd tv ? how's it look ?

I haven't actually used my PSP in over a year.. but everything was pretty easy at the time. There are PS1 games that won't work, of course, but I think many do, and they work quite well. It's Sony's emulator, IIRC. I've only played Gran Turismo and FF7, both worked perfectly.

I didn't do much Web stuff because the browser was brand new at the time, but text entry wasn't so easy. It's amusing for "warwalking" though

I highly recommend Squarez. I spent more time playing that than doing anything else with my PSP.

If you watch UMD movies from the PSP via component cables, it looks like a DVD quality movie.

When playing games, the faults that weren't noticeable on a small screen are very visible on a big screen TV. Even beautiful games like Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core take a hit when played on a TV.

One HUGE thing to note: when you connect the PSP to the TV via component cables, movies will play in full screen. Games will only be displayed on about 1/2 of the screen surrounded by a thick, black frame like so:

I see, my Sharp has some options, zoom, stretch, super stretch, dot by dot....so maybe one of these will make a game full screen.

hopefully I'll find out tomorrow.

how many gb's of memory can you run in it ? I saw an adapter card that would fit 2 16 gb cards into this little gizmo that fit's in the mem stick slot. that's a nice amount of space for vids, mp3's etc.

I'm going to pick up a refurb slim from gamestop if they have a good return policy and maybe extended service plan. sony offers 2 yr replacement for $40 which includes mishandeling and that seems pretty reasonable to me.

logan, what firmware are you running ? I would like to run some PS1 and some snes games...is there a saturn emulator for it ? virtua fighter would be cool...

hopefully the next gen PSP will have tilt control like the PS3 controller (and ipod touch) and maybe a built in camera instead of the UMD...with 16gb memory cards, who needs UMD's ? personally I'd rather see a querty keyboard as part of an ipod touch style screen or an add on than a slide out feature like the milo or some phones.

and actually, heh, the ps1 games I'd like to run I do already own

and it occurs to me I'd like to play Panzer Dragoon Saga for the saturn which I do own too but never had time to get much int the first disc. that would indeed be cool !

maybe a whole 'nother can of worms but how is cross platform game controll work when the button arrangement is different ?

system charging .....

got home with it and it's charging now. =^)

picked up Aeon Flux (2 disc set of the original cartoons, seemed apropriate to watch on a PSP)
Ghost in the Shell
and Namco's Ridge Racer. later tonight I'll try downloading some game demos off the PS website.

I hope my screen is free of dead pixels !!

oh, I see on ebay there is some memory sticks way cheaper than at the Sony Style store...anyone have a problem with fake Sony memory ?

1. You can run up to 8GB. However, PS1 games or back ups will not play due to the lack of speed of the 8GB cards. Use 4GB cards Mark II or Ultra Speed or whatever the high speed ones are called. Slow cards will not play anything above SNES.

2. I'm running 4.02 M33-2.

I just got the brandy-new PSP-3000, and with the bundle they have this purchase. I guess I'm not a puzzly-type of person. I tried getting through two stages and I couldn't do it.

SanDisk is the brand I'd use. Much cheaper.

let me know if you want to sell the game. it's not too hard after you get the hang of it.
