I have this machine I have been working on. It runs off windows nt. And the hard drive is completely full. Everytime we turn it on and it tries to run the software for the machine it errors out. I have already went threw and deleted stuff i didnt think was needed. And I uninstalled stuff I didnt think was needed(paint ETC). But if there is anything you guys can think of that most people wouldnt think to get rid of that would be great.

I am wondering how big of a hard drive windows NT can recongize. Because I know windows 98 could only go so big and stuff. I am wondering if they just have the hard drive partitioned to a smaller size than it actually is.

They want me to upgrade the computer and software to windows XP pro and it costs 10,000 so I am hoping that by finding some more stuff to delete I can get by for at least awhile.

Did you dump the temp directories? Dump WUTemp on C and Temp in Windows directory. Clear the temporary IE files. Of course all of this is probably totally different in NT but it's worth a try if you can find the temp folders in NT.

the bigger concern is not so much the hard drive limit of NT but the hard drive limit of your BIOS.

4Gb limit for your system partition, you can get it to almost 7.8Gb with some modifications. After that it's like 132Gb for the other partitions.

I dumbed the temp IE files already. What kind of mods are you talking about Cynthetig?

It's not an easy simple fix. I'd not recommend it.

I do have to ask why this machine is running NT still?

Windows NT installs like other versions of Windows a large number of graphical and audio files that most people never use. You can search for .bmp and .wav files and delete those that you don't have need for.
Also look into if there are extra copies of user profiles on that drive.
NT has a diskmanager (very similar to XP's disk management) that should show you how big NT thinks your HD is.

We bought the machine in 2000 and it came new with windows nt. Its just in the last 2 years they started using windows xp on these. Idk if it has anything to do with it coming from germany.

Well I looked today. And according to windows it has a 2gb hard drive. IDK if that is a 10gb partitioned into a 2gb. IDK how to check that without opening up the computer. And at this time we have 3mb free space. I checked all wav files and bmps and there is none left. So i figure the manufacture already took them off.

Back in 2000 a 2 - 10 Gb drives were common. There are 2 things that would greatly affect what I would do next.
What kind of computer is it (laptop, desktop, cpu and mem) ?
Why still NT on it (software requirements, drivers issue ...) ?

In the disk manager or hardware manager you should be able to see the manufacturer indentity string for the HD, that can then be used to search online the actual specks of the drive.

You may be able to save a little bit by limiting the size of your event viewer logs. These tend to be disk hogs and probably can be scaled down.

Also, look for log files (e.g. Web Servers etc. tend to write logs ad-infinitum). You need to make a call whether you can dump these (or some of them).

If you can figure out storing this (or something similar) somewhere:
JDiskReport
It is a useful tool for quickly telling you where the disk space is used, but does need a jre to run. You may be able to find similar that will run without java - google is your friend :)

Finally, have you looked at how much permanent swap file space is allocated? I'm not 100% sure that you can set it, but I would not be surprised - this could be eating a huge portion of your disk...

edit: also look to see if you have a memory.dmp file from your last system crash. This can be deleted, and (at least in XP and I'm going to assume in NT) you can minimise the size of this file when/if it is created.

what about old emails ? I got a gig or more back on my NT system deleting my dbx file. lost all my emails though.
my system booted up with just a few kb's to spare....any chance there's a bad stick of memory ?

I dont think it will have any old emails. Its always been a machine and I removed the email client.

Its still NT mostly because thats the way it came. And from what the manufacture of the machine tells me. When you pay 10k to get it upgraded to XP they come in and put a entire new computer in. It only has like 64mb ram and etc. It would have a tough time with XP. Also they change out the drivers for the axis.

The computer on the machine is a desktop.

They really dont want to talk to me about fixing the issue. They just want to upgrade.

Do you guys think I could repartition the drive for say 3gb if it is a larger drive scaled down? Would NT work without any problems running on a 3gb hd instread of a 2gb. Or maybe take the 2gb out and have it copied onto a 3gb.
