The best solution is prevention.

Use firefox - Mozilla | Firefox web browser & Thunderbird email client
Get these extensions:
Adblock plus - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
NoScript - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
CS Lite - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...s+lite&cat=all

This allows you to enable your normal sites, and stop others from exploiting anything. Of course, firefox isn't tied to the operating system like IE, so it's safer in that regard as well.

Use avast! antivirus, it's free for home use and has resident memory (live file) monitoring - avast! 4 Home Edition - FREE antivirus software - Download

Adaware works too, but you hardly need it if you use the above tools.

FYI:
the 4 links aren't paid for programs.

HijackThis also gives very much needed information as to what is exactly going on in your machine to help people find out what the problem is. We help people fix these things all the time, mostly starting off with HijackThis listings.

good that you figured it out.

I had the same problem a few days ago and used HiJack This to detect and remove the offending BHO (Browser Helper Object). See info on BHO's : SpywareInfo > Browser Helper Objects (BHOs)
