What's Your Favorite Text Editor?

What do the TFP'ers have to say about text editors?

my preference has always been

Unix: vim
win32: textpad

I've recently given up textpad for gvim on win32 and am very happy with the results.

Elitegibson 04-21-2003 09:55 AM

I use textpad for editing code, but I use just plain ole notepad for writing notes to myself. If I'm forced to use linux, I like pico.

kgb 04-21-2003 09:57 AM

I like vi in Unix but I can never remember any of the commands. In windows I have a tendency to use wordpad/notepad but I am thinking of switching to something that actually works well.

SaltPork 04-21-2003 09:59 AM

UltraEdit is my favorite text editor-unless I'm doing Java stuff then I prefer TextPad only because of the ability to compile and run the code from there.

saberyo 04-21-2003 10:00 AM

try u some gvim goodness

give gvim a shot in windows

gvim

It has the hands on feel like the unix version with the clikity-clikness of windows.

hrdwareguy 04-21-2003 10:08 AM

Even in Windows, I stull use MS Edit

BigJonnyJ 04-21-2003 10:19 AM

Gvim is where it's at! Oh and Vim in *nix

rekinom 04-21-2003 10:26 AM

Another vote for UltraEdit right here.

So many useful tools in that application, plus it's cheap.

Boner 04-21-2003 11:43 AM

vim in Unix, VisualSlickEdit in Winders

charliex 04-21-2003 11:58 AM

boxer as a text only editor, devstudio for code
emacs for unix
microemacs for when i forget i like boxer

Cuball 04-21-2003 12:09 PM

UltraEdit when using Windows and Emacs when under linux

Empty_One 04-21-2003 12:11 PM

in linux I use nano. It's light, and it's easy for me to remember the basic commands. It helps that they are listed on the bottom of the screen.

In windows, I use textpad or note pad if I'm just doing something small.

Peetster 04-21-2003 12:12 PM

kedit on my Linux box.

juanvaldes 04-21-2003 12:31 PM

BBEdit or vim depending on my mood.

nine 04-21-2003 12:36 PM

TextPad

boatguy234 04-21-2003 12:51 PM

Orionath 04-21-2003 01:20 PM

Vim on Linux, vi on Unix, EditPadLite on Wonders.
Just installed gvim on my Win2k box. I'll have to try that -- I've been using vim in Cygwin too.

The_Dude 04-21-2003 01:47 PM

word baby

cheerios 04-21-2003 02:02 PM

word == teh crappy! depends on what I'm doing.
java == vim on X, textpad on XP
C++ == ProjectBuilder on X, MS's IDE on XP
HW == textedit on X, textpad/wordpad on XP

I use Notepad for almost everything. Personal notes, reminders, jokes, small reports, statistics, web-URLS, almost anything.
Its small, has a tiny memory footprint, and works well.

Haasax 04-21-2003 02:32 PM

Chalk up another UltraEdit :)

*edit* Gonna give gvim a try, I used to love vi back when I worked with unix but i think i may find it hard to go back now, its been a long time ;0

spanky spangler 04-21-2003 02:37 PM

BBEdit or vim, depends if my mousing hand is playing up.

Fallon 04-21-2003 02:46 PM

On linux, I am using nano/pico
on my windows side, when I had it, i used Professional/Programmer File Editor 32. Nifty little program.

ratbastid 04-21-2003 02:52 PM

chodarama 04-21-2003 03:03 PM

WildZero 04-21-2003 05:02 PM

Windows: Notepad
Mac OS X: BBEdit
Unix: pico

Dave 04-21-2003 07:16 PM

Vim, becuase I need an editor, not an OS (referring to emacs, for those of you who've never heard a comment like that before).

zizdog69 04-21-2003 11:18 PM

TextPad for me. Best thing out there to help beginners with web building!

yotta 04-22-2003 02:13 AM

I use gvim on linux (home) and windows (work)

frenik 04-22-2003 07:05 AM

In linux I use vi when I'm stuck to a console, kwrite when I'm not (haven't used linux for a year or two). In windows it's UltraEdit.

XHydralisk 04-22-2003 10:46 AM

I use a program call WordPerfect for writing essays. It works great, but nobody else has it, so I can never send my files to other people.

GremlinDelirium 04-22-2003 12:05 PM

Notepad baby! all the way!!! but i am going to give this gVim thing a try.... I've tried UEdit, works great but the crack for it sucks so i stopped using it, Also it seemed more powerful than I needed cause i don't really need to do anything with hex... but it does c code and html which is really cool.

Phat Bank 04-22-2003 12:18 PM

BBEdit, all the way. www.barebones.com

WOW, i never knew that anybody was still using wordperfect today. I remember back when the only way to write stuff was using wordperfect 5.1/ 6.0a for DOS.

Back to the thread, I'm with the people who use notepad in windows (there is just something about simple text files that most non-computer people don't understand).

Cuball 04-22-2003 01:43 PM

oh yes WP 5.1 my god, what was it to quite ALT-F7 or something, damn I must have had like over 100 key combinations in my head over the past years ...

if find it strange that so few use emacs ??? it's the most powerfulll editor out there imo, but the learning curve isn't that easy :-(

ps: it even has games in it :-)

i8one2 04-22-2003 04:23 PM

Cetus CWORDPAD 3.0 and its FREEWARE

Krycheck 04-22-2003 05:12 PM

vi for linux if I could just remember the commands. Kwrite if I'm lazy.
