Gimp VS Photoshop

I was wondering if anyone here uses Gimp and Photoshop and can give a decent comparison ? I've been reading some google results and the home of Gimp of course...seems pritty good. the screen shots look pritty user friendly and similar to PS.

just checking if anyone here is a user of Gimp or hopefully bolth.

thanks :)

the only thing CRAPPY about gimp in my mind is that all the tool box are independent of the view window. In photoshop, you have your main Software and all the tool box are on top of that. in gimp, it's 1 or the other. like if you maximize your picture, you will lose the view of your tool box. that was the only thing keeping me away from GIMP.

As I am a Photoshop user, it was very hard for me to find my way around gimp. I'm sure it is a pretty capable package, I just couldn't adapt to the interface.

I may have a solution for that...2 monitors. oh and I have read about "gimpshop" a virsion with it's own bacground.

Manic_Skafe 06-22-2008 07:06 PM

I've got the 2 monitor set up as well and I still find Gimp to be a pain in the ass. With Photoshop (especially Elements) everything just seems to be exactly where you need it. Gimp's features are scattered, it's help topics are a joke and...Photoshop makes everything easier.

And I started using Gimp before Photoshop.

boink 06-22-2008 07:53 PM

hmm, that's not encouraging. but paying $600+ for PS vs free Gimp ?

This isn't confined to the GIMP. GNU projects sometimes seem to be allergic to aesthetics.

The GIMP is very powerful once you get the hang of it, but has a truly daunting learning curve. I've never used Photoshop in any meaningful way though, so I can offer no comparison.

Lasereth 06-23-2008 06:41 AM

GIMP has a high learning curve and the UI isn't very intuitive like Photoshop. I have seen some amazing stuff done with it though. Maybe you can search for some tutorials?

That $600 all goes into GUI design, ease of use, compatibility, and work flow management. There's a reason they are priced as they are.

boink 06-23-2008 05:10 PM

yeah I know...I do already know what I need to know about PS (more or less but I know it'll do a heck of alot more than I use it for) and I already have alot of video tutorials for PS too.

maybe I should check out some adds on Craigs list.

This post sort-of compels me to install and learn GIMP. I think I can handle the learning curve, and I've never done THAT much in PS in school to where I feel like I need it. Might as well teach myself (if I'm ever compelled to do that - installing it is a good first step!) on something free and unique as opposed to touting my warez skillz like a loser.

I can download GIMP for free and deal with the headache of the interface or I can get a free, legal copy from work. I'm enjoying my CS3. GIMP is designed by people who think like programmers, not like end users. I couldn't stand it the few times I tried to use it, especially since I taught myself PS on version 6 and it's remained pretty consistent since then.

Speed_Gibson 06-26-2008 02:55 PM

I prefer the interface of the GIMP much more than PS after using both - much more intuitive. There are some features in PS that I would love to have, adjustment layers being one of those.
But I would like to have a recent copy of PS to learn more about it, which also involves upgrading my computer (no intention there anytime soon, PS 7 works fine but CS 2 or later would be groaning horribly from the splash screen on) while the free option does a wonderful job for me.

Lucifer 06-28-2008 07:38 PM

There is a free program called Gimpshop which uses the Gimp engine and mimics the photoshop interface and menus. I'm curious, as a long time GIMP user, what the photoshop people think of it.

Speed_Gibson 06-28-2008 09:28 PM

One real problem I have noticed with Gimpshop (aside from the interface but that is personal bias) is the older versions used as the core. This is listed on the website <GIMPshop 2.2.8>, which is not using the numerous improvements since then up to the current 2.4.6, and it does keep improving with every release in the 2.5.x branch.

ok...I installed Gimp.

no tools show up in the window at all. under "file" is an option to close. nothing else like err file/open/new whatever ...? WTF ??!?

clicking windows in hopes of getting tool menues out...nothing happens.

wow, I can see why it's free. theres nothing here at all ! I can't even drag and drop a file into the main window....

Yeah, there's definitely something up with your install.

For something along a little bit of a different line, you might want to check out inkscape: http://www.inkscape.org/

As the site says, it's "An Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. "

I don't have much in the way of artistic/drawing talent, but it's a heck of a lot of fun to play with.

boink 07-01-2008 04:41 PM

thanks robot but I need a pixel based thing. vector has uses, like it's good to print from. but it dosn't help my needs.

I'll have a go w/ re installing gimp.

for sure! I use it for all my logo needs. it's pretty powerful. but yes, not the same as photoshop/gimp.
