Audiophiles, help!
I have an opportunity to get a pretty hefty discount on some speakers, so I'm trying to build a halfway decent home theater system. Can someone who knows more about things read over this and see what the missing piece of the puzzle is? My only source is going to be my media PC, so I'm not sure if I need a reciever or just an amp or what...I left all the specs for card and speakers in, in case they meant something to others (they don't mean much to me at this point)
Source: Razor AC-1 7.1 Surround Sound card in my hometheater PC (purchased and assembled) Dolby® Pro-Logic IIx surround processor splits stereo audio into 7.1 channel surround sound Independent Dolby® Digital Live (AC-3) 5.1 real-time encoding bit-stream to facilitate connection with CE AV receiver DTS® Interactive Real-time 5.1 encoder that takes any 2 or more channels and encodes it into DTS bit stream DTS® NeoPC An upmixing matrix that turns any 2 channel audio into 7.1 surround sound Supports 7.1 CH digital audio playback for WinXP 64, WinXP ,Win2000 (Microsoft® DirectX V.9.0 above is required) and most industrial standards of PC 3D sound for gaming, including EAX™ 1.0&2.0, A3D™ 1.0, and DirectSound™ PCI 2.2 interface (Burst Modes and Bus Mastering) 4 synchronous I2S input/output pairs Integrated 192k/24-bit S/PDIF receiver/transmitter Multi-channel AC-link (supports up to 2 AC97 codecs) S/PDIF IN supports digital loop back path for transforming between optical and RCA connection All I2S I/O pairs support 32-bit high-definition PCM data transfer and adjustable sample rate up to 192KHz Speakers: Center Channel--Speakercraft AIM Monitor Three LCR Two 6 1/2" Aluminum Woofers Uni-Pivot Module with 2 1/2" Aluminum Dome Midrange and 1" Aluminum Dome Tweeter Timbre-matched to: AIM Monitor 3 Efficiency: 91dB 1W/1m Power Recommendations: 5 - 140 watts (undistorted) Impedance: 8 ohms Frequency Response: 38Hz - 20kHz ± 3dB Other six channels (front, side, rear): Speakercraft AIM Monitor Three 6 1/2" Aluminum Woofer Pivoting 1" Aluminum Dome Tweeter Timbre-Matched to AIM Monitor LCR 3 Efficiency: 89dB 1W/1m Power Recommendations: 5 - 100 watts (undistorted) Impedance: 8 ohms Frequency Response: 46Hz - 20kHz ± 3dB Sub: Haven't picked one yet. Basically anything that Speakercraft offers. Inbetweeny stuff Here I'm drawing a blank. I can get a Speakercraft 8 channel amp in either 35 or 65 watt, but I don't know if that would be all I'd need between soundcard and speakers, or if I need a reciever or something also. This is the main area I need help. So, can you guys help me with the following: 1. Is that speaker setup going to be acceptable? 2. Would an 8 channel amp work as all I'd need between my soundcard out and my speakers? 2b. I'm an amp newbie...will the only difference between an 8-channel 35 watt amp and an 8 channel 65 watt amp be maximum volume? 3. If the amp isn't going to cut it, is some better magical mystery box I can get for under $400 that would do this system justice? Or something in conjunction with an amp? 4. On the crappy surround sound I have right now, there's a noticable 60hz hum when there's nothing playing on the soundcard. Do I need to ground my HTPC chassis better or something to nuke this? Will I need a compressor or filter or something to kill it once it's playing through big-boy speakers? TIA
