Network

Does anyone know how I can network my Windows desktop and my Apple laptop? I'm tired of using a USB drive to move files back and forth.

My laptop is wireless and my desktop is wired.

Laptop: Apple iBook G4, OS 10.4.11, 512 RAM, 1.42 GHz processor
Desktop: Dell Dimension 8200 (2001), XP Home Ed, 2002 SP1, 256 RAM, Pentium 4, 1.7 GHz

Thanks guys.

My daughter has an ibook and she is able to join the workgroup here at our house. I have a linux box with a large public samba share that we use to xfer files between computers... I believe the mac has network gui of some sort that makes it pretty easy to join the network, or at least map a share from another system.

try this

I've done this. It's a pain in the ass. You basically need to set up a shared folder in Windows XP (I don't know about Vista). But you might need to set up a user account in Windows just to interact with the Mac. I did this wirelessly, but I rarely use it. It's much easier to use other methods, especially since the wireless only transfers up to 1MB/second (if I'm lucky).

If you have a big USB drive, you might want to stick with it.

If you really, really want to try it, I used resources such as these....and a lot of trial and error:

This setup might be good for huge files you don't want to muck around with on smaller USB devices.

If the above methods don't work, try Google searches for keywords like: networking OS X Windows XP or something. That is how I found the method that worked for me.

sounds like i'm missing something because while you make it sound complicated it really should just be as easy as having a wireless router in the house and having them connected to that.

I just setup an FTP service and connect to the desktop via FTP. Faster, and has failsafes like continuing copy after stopping for whatever reason.

Wow, Baraka. It definitely sounds like quite the hassle.

Cyn, how do I go about doing that FTP thing you're talking about?

BulletProof FTP Server for the PC

connect to the PC with Fetch

If you setup your network correctly you can even get the files from your home PC to your work, friends, laptops as you travel around the world.

If you need to get files from your Mac, you'll do the same in reverse, get an FTP Server for the Mac, and an FTP client for the PC.

I still dont understand these convoluted suggestions.

1 router would effectively put these computers 1 NAT transaction apart from eachother.

Cynthetiq 01-17-2008 07:50 PM

yes but you need some sort of authentication schema and protocol to allow it.

he said XP home, not vista. :p

as far as networking goes,

this makes it seem fairly simple

this is a little more in depth
