Does anybody use Firewire?

The motherboard I'm building my first PC on (Asus a78nx Deluxe) comes with a little card type thing with two firewire inputs.

My question is, does anybody actually use these? From a little bit of Googling, I deduce that Firewire is mainly used for digital cameras and uber DVD drives....

If I go ahead and hook up the firewire, can it cause problems with my system? Should I even bother putting it in if I'm not gonna edit movies on my PC?

ipod. just put it in, u never know when you'll need it.

Boner 06-20-2003 11:04 PM

I'd go ahead and install it. If you are running a modern OS, you probably won't have any problems.

The biggest use that I've seen for firewire on PCs is for DV video cameras.

just do it cause u might need it

manalone 06-21-2003 02:00 AM

do it. Firewire is a-mazing.

I have used it a couple of times to get stuff off a friend's portable
hard drive. It's so fast, it's the bombdiggidy

My wife and I both have FireWire webcams and I also use it for my iPod.

Firewire is great, i have the ports on the two main machines I use. Plus you can use them for external hard drives and an iPod.

YourNeverThere 06-21-2003 10:03 AM

i just like the name, Fire Wire, sounds fast and firey, with wires involed somehow. I've never had a use for one though :(

diergray 06-21-2003 10:16 AM

Never had a problem with my firewire. I use it for a DVD burner and for my camcorder. Sooner or later I am going to buy an Ipod.

Definitely

I suggest that you should put the card in anyways, if it causes you no problem, and it should be trouble free. Sooner or later, you will be using it. And installing the card when you need it, is more troublesome than installing it when you are building the machine.

Firewire is awesome. I use it for my external dvd drive. iPods use them. It has many uses and is better than USB 1 and 2.

tmoscovitch 06-23-2003 04:29 PM

I use firewire to run a home studio on my mac. I can plug guitars into an interface, and the audio shows up on my screen. Not bad....

wakelagger 06-24-2003 12:55 PM

I love firewire. It just seems so unique, and full of pizzaz unlike the generic USB interface. Plus, for some odd reason, I love the firewire symbol. I don't know why. Geek tendencies?

Amen. I hate USB.

The cool thing about Firewire that I am disappointed hasn't been used is that it's a peer to peer connection.

In other words, a Firewire device could be made to connect to other Firewire devices. For example, you could connect a digital camcorder directly to an external Firewire hard drive and transfer data.

It would be nice if Apple made the iPod work with other devices. I would LOVE to have a multiple format PC Card/Memory Stick/USB Drive reader I could conect directly to my iPod.

nope

I use FireWire for video capture. I have a 100 GB FireWire drive attached to my Windows 2000 Server full of MP3s. It's well worth it.

Soggybagel 06-25-2003 10:18 PM

Firewire is great...when I use it which is unfortunatly rare.

Actually cheese firewire is 4 times faster than 10/100 at 400mb.......and I have tried it and yes it is faster.

Konichiwaneko 07-08-2003 10:35 PM

I was about to point that out Merker :)

Also with my experience with Firewire it's been a little more snappier and nicer.

I have a external cdburner that's on a firewire/usb2.0 interface. When it's on USb it tends to be laggy when I'm first scanning it, but the transfer is still great.

Firewire the transfer is the same, but initially looking at the cd it flows like water over tammi's ass.

I haven't had to use firewire in a while, but I like it. I would like to see how the 800 standard fares.

hrdwareguy 07-09-2003 05:45 AM

I use firewire to transfer video from my video cam to my comp. Then I can edit it and burn it to DVD.

tikki 07-09-2003 05:56 AM

My computing experience would be totally different without my little Firewire cable.

Sync my iPod

Mount my iBook at work in target disk mode. Makes it just an external hard drive

Transfer DV.

R_one 07-09-2003 06:47 AM

I just built a system based on the same MOBO. Got anymore questions?

BTW - I love your avatar cheese - pr0n without even having to go to a pr0n site. Hmmmmmmm..... booooobies

losfp 07-10-2003 01:20 AM

I use firewire all the time... transfer data to my iPod, plus I have an external FW HDD, and I do the occasional DV transfer from my digital video cam. Of course, if you don't have the devices, you may not use it as much...

punx1325 07-10-2003 10:30 PM

Its great for editing video on your digital video cam, but other than that i don't have any use for it
