Wireless router question
I am borderline computer literate.
I just purchased a new computer that has windows Vista on it. I had Road Runner installed on it, with a cable modem. I want to have Road Runner on the other 2 computers in my house. Before I had a Linksys router hooked to all three computers, but now that the Road Runner has a cable attached to it, I'm not sure how to go about connecting the other two. I had thought I could get a wireless router to connect them, however, the two Toshiba laptops have wireless cards in them, but the new computer I just got does not. It has no wireless information in the system? Could someone help me out with this problem, thank you. |

I'm not sure I'm entirely clear on what you're asking, so I'll just go ahead and run through the set-up you'll need in order to accomplish what you want.
You'll have the coax cable (the round one) connected to your cable modem and an ethernet cable (the one that looks like a phone cord, but wider) running from the modem to the port on your router marked WAN. You will then run another ethernet cable from the wireless router (which should have several ethernet ports in addition to wireless capability) to the computer that does not have a wireless adapter and will be required to configure the other two to connect to the wireless network. It is strongly suggested as well that you encrypt your network for security, as well, but fortunately since you're running cable you shouldn't have to do any set-up for the actual connection. Any questions?

yes martian, I have a couple questions.
what you told me to do in the post worked great. I hooked it up the way you said, and for almost 4 days everything was fine. And then, I tried to sign onto one of the laptops with the wireless connection, and it would not let me. nor the other one. Also the main computer would not let me make a connection either. The only way I could, or can, connect with the roadrunner, is to disconnect the wireless router, and connect the modem directly to my computer. I contacted "live help" from Roadrunner, but they honestly gave me the runaround. In the "diagnosing problem" feature at the Roadrunner site, it says to disconnect the router, and connect the Ethernet cord directly to the computer, it states, "you will be able to reconnect the router after establishing connection"....however when the connection is established, it makes no mention of connecting the router. I got in touch with "live help" from roadrunner again, and I wish I could post the transcript, it is laughable. She told me to use a device like a router to connect multiple computers. I told her I tried that. She said she is here to assist me further. Then she tells me she does not have the resources to help me further. I said, so you can't help me? she said "Our connectivity specialists will need to address this issue as they possess the resources required to assist you further. " I am at a loss.

Are the two wireless computers connecting to the router and just failing to access the broadband, or are they unable to connect at all?
