Mac's Aqua uses system-wide anti-aliasing on all its fonts. Windows XP has something similar, but you have to install it/turn it on...but it doesn't seem to work as well. I'm not sure what Vista does.

What you see might have something to do with the display design as well.

I don't think it is just the font system. I believe that the Mac LCD's are much higher in contrast than PC monitors or LCD choices.

I'm at the Apple store posting this message from one right now and the iMac monitor whites are very very white in comparison to the 21" CRT I was just using at the office.

of course it could also be that you drank the Kool Aid that Steve Jobs passed around.

My understanding is that the difference is mostly in out-of-the-box settings. I don't think Apple even manufactures their own panel components.

Of course I could be wrong, and I do love my Apple computers...

Um, this is what I was trying to say. Anti-aliasing has a huge impact, and, man, those displays are nice.

seriously, most digital LCDs are a contrast ratio of 700:1 - 400:1 in comparison to CRTs which are about 100:1.

My twin AOpen digital LCDs at home have popping whites at 500:1 and going to these CRTs at work is like sitting behind tinted windows.

For you folks at home using LCD's and windows XP, right click your desktop, click properties, go to the Appearance tab, click Effects, and under "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" select Clear Type and hit OK a few times...

Also, to anyone considering mac vs. pc, keep in mind that many university programs are created either solely or sooner in windows format. A useful alternative is to just take some time, install and learn Linux, and emulate both systems as needed, with xp or something to dual boot as a backup. Then, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment that you actually know what your computer is doing behind your back, and you can learn a bit about data management and stuff as well. It's an empowering feeling to rewrite your partition table and install something like Gentoo to exactly meet your needs, on a hardware and software level. And you just might learn (out of necessity) how to recover lost files and partitions, just in case (be sure to backup - the words of the wise techie).

Um... Get a macbook pro and dual boot/VM it! I am not sure, but you can probably throw linux on there and triboot! (i know, it is not the term). The hardware is solid, the support is there (but for the isight, i hear) and you can look cool! (ok. so, not exactly).

that has the most flexibility. Currently, I am longing for the time in which I have enough to make the XP computer a media center in the LR and buy a Mac again. Crufty stuff, this windows.

Leopard comes with bootcamp preinstalled, so on any Intel based mac, you'll be able to natively run any windows OS as an option upon boot.

That is totally rad. Really a good move, I'd think as far as making people more comfortable to shift their dollars into that corner of the market. Nice.

Does it come with XP or Vista (I hope it's XP if it's either), though? I just realized that one probably has to purchase Windows OS, much the same as Virtual PC or Dave required on PowerPC Macs once upon a time.

It doesn't come with XP or Vista, just lets you install them if you have a copy laying around.

One of the more interesting Mac/PC articles I've read recently. I wondered based on the title if it was going to be worth even a passing glance, but it's remarkably unbiased and straightforward. Enjoy:

That is funny. Reminds me of Frequency but not 'Yahoo!'.
