Has anyone had the following experience:

I am a tech geek, and I have successfully upgraded my custom-built computer from a few years ago, to something very modern. Everything is good up to todays standard, except the processor.

Because of it's age, I need to get a new case, motherboard, and processor. (A barebone system basically). Yet, I have a girlfriend who denies my request to save about $300 for this. We have a baby coming, a wedding coming, and it took me a year to convince her to allow me to get a digital camera, which we still can't get until after august.

Unless I can earn the money from another source. Anyone have good ideas about how a tech geek can earn extra $?

I feel your pain. Even after taking a job making me almost 2x as much as my old one (with 3x the stress) my wife still won't let me drop some cash on a new Mac. Bah.

However, you're a geek which means that friends and family will invariably call you with problems. Gently persuade them to donate to the Viveleroi() New Computer Fund. It helped me when I was in college.

When you were single, did you have a problem affording new toys? Now that you are committed to a child, never mind the mother, you have made a lifestyle choice that will last at least eighteen years. Deal with it. Finish school, as high a graduate level you can acheive, think of your family, not yourself. The cool toy and party boy days are over.

Now that the father and son talk is over, be the best at what you do, achieve promotions, make your family proud! Realise the cool stuff you used to cherish, are now something you want for your children.

Asking folks on a computer forum how to manage your lifestyle, well, this gestation period was meant to allow for personality, and financial changes. Deal with it.

Since you're a geek, get a part time job at Circuit City selling Apples, and Pentiums to rubes.

No matter your decision, the choice has been made. You're a dad. Deal with it.

My wife won't let me? Come on who wears the pants here. We are men and thats that. If you have the cash and can aford it while not taking away from your family go buy what you want.
If this scares you and you don't want to feel the rath of yur wife then do like the rest of us and do some repairs on the side for cash. Make a PC upgrade fund.

Hey poof, I respect your comment but I feel you're out of place in your judgement. I have a wellpaying job and I do support my chiold and wife, yet I m in school, and I am in the process and working VERY hard to earn my computer science degree, and my system is getting to old to be able to process and run the same things I am learning about. It is not a matter of a toy (it is a toy, but I do seriously need it for college.)

Hey viveleroi0,

Have you considered putting aside a small amount each week until you accumulate the total amount you want. May take a while but eventually you will save enough.

Perhaps, while at work, you spend money on things (coffee, lunch, snack, etc.) that you can cut back and put those savings into this upgrade.

viveleroi0: you need to explain that to your wife, then, that you need it for class. If you explain that the small investment now will last for a good 5 years, and that hte other computer will still be useable, for the child, and for her? maybe she'll be more open. or sell the old box off for some money for parts
(the bits of it you aren't recycling).

Good luck, I know how hard it is ot have an aging system
