Portable GPS Navigation
Hey guys,
I need some help. I want to get my girlfriend an in-car portable GPS navigation system but have no clue what is good and what sucks. If someone could give me some recommendations on which brands/models are good I would much appreciate it. I know they're kind of expensive so anything under $600 would be nice. Thanks guys. -BigD |

I have a Tom Tom - they retail over here (in the UK) for about £100.
I don't think they're as expensive as you think.

GPS purchase
What do you need it to do? Are you going to use it out of the vehicle as well. Do you know what various systems are capable of? Camping or hiking on your activity list. The problem is once you find out what the dang things are capable of, you then realise what you should have bought. Going into a gps systems website, is an option; but not half as revealing as getting hold of one in your paws and seeing to believe. If you are seriously wanting to make an informed purchase, spend time on a unit, or just get your girlfriend a tom tom and find out what it is capable of, after the fact. Is she tech: minded? most systems are pretty user-friendly, and will get you there. Some even have blue-tooth phone linkage capabilities. Go look, see, and do end up giving it to her. It gets harder to part with, the better you get to know the unit. I think in your country, 600 will get you quite a serious piece.
Good-luck. |

I'm about to pick up a Garmin StreetPilot c340. $250 or so. It's got an advantage over the 330 in that the voice directions tell you the street name instead of just "turn left, next street." Helps avoid confusion.
I didn't get sucked in by the Nuvi - - from what i can tell it's essentially the same thing as the c series, only a little thinner. I don't consider that worth $100 to $200 extra. I looked at Cobra's new line, but wasn't impressed with it's routing abilities and it seemed crash happy. I was seriously considering a widescreen Tomtom, but I've red too many complaints of them breaking and people having a difficult time getting warranty service on them. Magellan is terrible at routing so they're right out. |

This is a comparison of the c340 and Nuvi 350. Either one is good, you just have to decide whether you want to pay for the extra features. |
