Hard drive is there.....but it isn't

The newest render box in our household is an MSI P6N-Platinum with 1gb of Corsair ddr2-667 and, a Pentium 830D, and 2 - 250gb SATA drives, as well as one DVD-RW IDE drive.

I connected an old drive on the EIDE bus in the slave position with most of our important information from the old render box last night and started to copy the files over. The drive was set the Cable Select and XP Ultimate found it right away. The copying was tedious when one is copying 80gb of data, but I got through 12.6gb before the copy process started failing to respond. I had the drive out of the case on the wood floor next to the machine, and it felt quite hot to the touch.

Okay, overheating IDE drive I said. I shut down and walked away for the night. Woke up this morning before work and restarted. 80gb IDE slave did not show up in the post list, and was not there in widows. Controll panel show it as there, but a touch test says it is not spinning. I do not think it is being initialized as opposed to having failed.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
USB case is useless when copying that many GB, as errors start to occur in data flow in my humble experiance.

Should I switch to SLave jumper instead of Cable Select? Put it on the second IDE bus as master?

it's probably not over heating, they can take it really hot and still function just fine, however, stick a large fan on it, get some good airflow and you can keep room temp or slightly below.

if it's IDE, it will spin if it is plugged in, i'd check inside of disk manager in windows to see if it is detected but not being read right.

Disk manager says the disk is "Unreadable"

Is this a software problem, or are we talking crashed heads?

What does windows mean when it states "unreadable"
