Copying from TiVo
The setup: Tivo Series 2 DVR, separate combo DVD/VCR player/recorder
The problem: Some programs recorded onto TiVo from television are blocked from being copied to DVD. These are not earth-shaking programs I'm talking about here, but mundane programs like old Dick Cavett interviews and stuff. Is there a way around this? Before I take the time to try this pain-in-the-ass manuever, would it work if I copied it from TiVo to VCR and then dubbed it from VCR to DVD? Or would I be blocked from copying it to VCR just like I am blocked from copying it to DVD?

You don't even need TiVo's software. You can use your web browser, just type in
https://{tivo ip}/nowplaying/index.html , username 'tivo', password is whatever the MAK is for your TiVo (check TiVo settings, it's listed in there somewhere). Select a show and download it. Then use DirectShow Dump to remove the TiVo encoding, and you can do anything you want with them from there.

Redlemon this is fantastic!
Everything looks really good for this except for a couple of things giving us trouble. I assume the MAK is the same as the MAC listed under TiVo settings, correct? And if so, we have six pairs of letters and numbers all separated by colons. Do we use the colons in the password? The first pair of letters are "ID" and is this part of the MAC or is this the MAC ID? There are also several 0's and O's and we aren't sure which is which, and it appears to time us out after three failed attempts. And on the Direct Dump site there are dozens of versions to download and we don't even know where to start there. Which ones do we need?

Oh, by the way, TiVo Desktop 2.5 is Vista compatible.
To be honest, I'm a Macintosh user, so I've never even tried Directshow Dump; I use TivoDecodeManager. And, it's been ages since I configured the password on it. Anyway, there shouldn't be any 'ohs' in it, only 'zeros', because I think it's hexadecimal. I'd enter the 12 hex numbers with colons with no spacing.

can you give me an example of what you cannot copy? because so far I've been able to copy everything via my Sony DirecDVD plugged into one of the RCA outs.

Redlemon, my God thanks a ton! I've been regaling Grancey with marvelous tales of being able to access TiVo through her brand new laptop and then when she finally tried it didn't support Vista. So I was feeling pretty low until you posted the latest link of the new version for Vista. YAY!!
cynthetique, any movie or program recorded off the premium channels (HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, etc.) has a burn protection embedded and we can't transfer them to DVD. Obviously, we're not trying to go into the bootleg business, but there are some amazing movies we've managed to capture onto TiVo that are not available anywhere for purchase and they're starting to eat up all the available space on my TiVo harddrive because we can't burn them. Also, there are a couple of specials on Dick Cavett or Bette Davis or something else I'm forgetting that were recorded off our basic cable and they also seem to be copy-protected.
