I built a ghetto looking router and it needs a name!

I put this together... It can connect to three wireless networks and run three access points all at once.

WiFi:

2x 200mw Prism 2.5 802.11b cards; one with 2.2dBi omni antenna, one with 5dBi omni antenna
1x 50mw Atheros 802.11g/a card with 7dBi omni antenna

Mainboard:

Soekris net4521
133MHz
64MB RAM
256MB CF
2x 10/100 Ethernet

My boyfriend requests LOLCATing. :P

The ultimate in cannabalizing.

My SO says, "Don't forget to cut ventilation holes in the box."

I don't know what to call the router, but I officially dub that fellow standing next to it in the second picture "Cat 5".

The CPU does not even need a heatsink... It doesn't get hot, so no vent holes needed.

Cats in a Box
The Three Spires of Doom
The Threeway
Menage a trois
The Connectorator
The Mystery Box

How does that even work, though? Can you really get the aggregate power of three connections? How do you control which network(s) you connect to?

I think I can relate, bobby, I know very little of technical computing prowess such as routers and the like... :shakehead:

I don't know one phrase in here...

Ha ha ha Cat 5. Yes please rename the cat Cat 5. That's too perfect for the picture.

As for the router......hmm......how about 802.cardboard?

ubertuber 06-28-2007 02:21 PM

Maybe you could upgrade it to a used pizza box?

Then you'd have 802.11P(epperoni)

It can connect to multiple networks at once, and it can load balance between them. It can't simply combine bandwidth, no, sadly. I configure it by logging in over a console and setting what wireless network to connect to.

I can't believe i laughed at this. I am a hopeless nerd...

I like 'Connectorator' 'Threeway' and 802.cardboard. What about 802.11box? Also suggested were cthulhu (invisible wireless tentacles of doom) and Mohawk.

The device is currently being used to provide optimized routing over two *cough* borrowed *cough* wireless networks (we're moving out soon, but the DSL here is already disconnected). Also to provide some transparent security though VPNs.

Been done (this isn't mine, btw)

can you aggregate the 3 wireless to leach from 3 neighbors wireless?

i'd call it the leach if you could

Nimetic 07-07-2007 04:03 PM

Call me paranoid, but I never mix electronics and paper/cardboard.

If anything goes wrong - paper catches fire to easily. I know that this is probably on a low voltage and all, but maybe you could put it in something else?

Apart from that, it looks ok. I'm particularly interested in this Soekris net4521. I'm looking that up now.

"The Cat's Arse" ? (just a thought ;) )
