Working with ID3 Tags
 

As I've mentioned the other day in another post, I've been slowly cleaning out my music library, and I had great help/input from TFP'ers with it so far... (thanks Daniel_ and JinnKai!)

So, I've been using Mp3tag to clean up the tags in my mp3s. What I wanted to know, was if there is a way to remove ID3v1 tags, and keep the information in the IDv2 tags? I don't see any real reason to be using both tags at once.

that's a good question: I'd like to find a software or plugin to remove the id3 tags for all my mp3s. (no tags whatsoever.)

I'm gonna go search the web and see what i can find.

it's the best I've found so far, it can edit tags in mass, and restructure them physicly based off of the tags.

just remember that not all devices can use the id3c2 tags (my car mp3 player is one of them.) so make sure you don't have any legacy devices before you wipe them all

Another great resource for tag editing is TagScanner. It's super easy to use and has functions like using freedb.org to automatically fill in tags for you. And best of all it's free! :) http://www.download.com/TagScanner/3...-10056506.html

You go to Tags > Batch Jobs > Delete > ID3v1/LYRICS3

I checked... my little Sansa doesn't have a problem just using ID3v2... and my big old sound system doesn't read tags at all... I'm good to go!

This is a good post. I just got this nice Toshiba Gigabeat and I need to basically re-tag most of my MP3s. I've been using ID3-TagIt and so far it's been alright, but I'm going to try these other things.

Also, i have a handful of MP3s which refuse to accept ID3v2 info. They are recent songs, but will not save the data. Any ideas?

I'd like to throw in my two cents, as I have been fairly pleased by my tag editor program. It is called Multi ID3 Tag Editor. Although I don't use most of its features, and the installed playback of your songs doesn't seem to work, it has the abilty to either use ID3v1 or ID3v2 depending on which you prefer. Also has multi-tagging properties, but rarely use it because I have no use for it. I like to be specific with my songs. Also, you can choose to upload the song lists you wish to edit, and leave it to be edited later if you don't complete your tags.

But what I have come across is that when you add an album cover to your MP3, it also resets the song's tag to default ID3v1. So first I tag the cover, then the description of the song. Or I use iTunes Song Info, right-click it and manually add the album cover without resetting the tags; that is the thing about iTunes, if you edit your tags there, it only is edited there and nowhere else, but I'm sure there is a function to change that if you choose. I just go by the defaults. I think I digressed a bit. :D

I know I got the program for free, but I forgot exactly what was entailed. It shows a register function, but as I recall, the site itself gives you a registration number free of cost. It was on a site that had other tools as well that you might find interesting.

Wow, I just looked up the site and it is a weird address; nonetheless, if you so choose, you can use the program I use, based on my description of what is capable from it and my personal experience with it.

I don't think so, because the IDv1's edited fine. I loaded them up in The GodFather and they're fine now.

Indeed, TagScanner is a great recommendation. Extremely powerful. It can handle pretty much any tag format and does so with extreme ease. You can manually edit tags yourself, altering many at a time, you can generate the tags based on the file name, you can select an album of files and have it check freedb, you can rename the files based on the tags, and a whole ton more.
