Streaming Windows Media Center to other computers
How can one do this?
I've read a few sites saying that MC can't stream to other comps, but I don't really believe that since it's just a computer and you can make these systems do whatever you pretty much want them to do with the right cracks/patches. Basically I have a bunch of old Pentium 3 machines that I would like to use as "extenders" to pull from a central server in my basement. Instead of having a TV in each room, I'll just put a laptop or a normal desktop w/ a monitor on the wall so I can then select whatever I wanna watch and stream it. However, some searches on google have returned blanks. Also, I've been interested in giving access to my MC server via the internet - so if I'm at work, I can still stream music/movies to my work machine's media player. I haven't found much about getting WMP to connect to media center, but I'm sure there's a plugin or something out there for it. Any help is greatly appreciated

Instead of streaming as you are thinking from Windows Media Center, why not just store all the files on the computer (the W.MC one) and network all the computers together and give access to the files to whatever computers you want?
Example: Computer A has all the videos Computer B wants to view the videos Computer A has a shared folder for the videos Computer B maps the shared folder as a drive and can pull up whatever it wants from that folder. Unless you want to have it all playing simultaneously on every computer

VLC will let you stream some video's.
however i would suggest a centralized file server and then just play them directly.

A possible solution is to run VNC (NOT VLC media player) server on your computer that will be serving "streams", and network that along with the P3s and run the VNC client on the old P3s and you can even run a lite client off your USB key at work.
Check the link for VNC software you could use. Best solution? No Is it versatile? Yes Is it easy? Pretty much, requires no haxx0ring. |
