Any ideas? My cdrw is gone.

Ok, I'm hoping someone may have a clue for the clueless( me). My cd drive has vanished from my computer. It won't recognize it at all. I'm running win 2K.on an old HP pavillion. When I go to my computer to look at the drives its no longer listed, and I can't play anything from that drive or burn to it.

When I go to setup it is still showing there and the lights come on when I boot up. I tried unplugging and rebooting numerous times to no avail. Any suggestions from techies would be appreciated. I guess I could do a complete op system reinstall, but am trying to avoid that if possible.

try uninstalling the drive and then it should recognize it when you reboot.
Settings>Control Panel>Add Remove Hardware

Hey, thanks. I was able to get it to uninstall although it had the little exclamation mark on it indicating a problem. When I rebooted it didn't install so I went through the add hardware wizard and got this message.

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
It has been working fine untill it vanished. It is a sony drive I added about a year ago. I can't understand why the driver would be a problem now.

re-install the drivers (and look for new drivers on the internet)

Update. I found this in the help pages but can't determine what might be the associated device.
