PC Media to DVD.. Two methods, which is ideal?

Lately I have been downloading and saving various motorsport DVDs and videos to my PC. My PC is a Pentium 866, with 256 MB RAM, and a replaced 64 MB Radeon video card. It has a TV-out function.

I currently have a DVD recorder connected to my TV that I use to record programs, etc.

The cable that came with the video card plugs into the video card itself, is yellow, and looks as if it connects with the yellow colored "yellow, red, and white" cables that are common among televisions and visual media. Yet, I tried hooking it up, and could not get the media playing on my PC to show up on my television (I tried Video 2, 3, and DV, though I am not sure which I need to connect it to). This is one possibility for getting the media from my PC and recording it on a DVD.

The second is to buy a DVD burner to install in my PC. As I said above, my PC is older, and I am not sure if it can sufficiently burn DVDs, even with a DVD burner.

Also, I am not familiar with installing drives into my PC, and when I took the cover off my case, I saw some wires going to the motherboard (I think), and this make me suspicious that I would not easily be able to remove my current DVD drive and install the new one. Is installing a DVD drive a simple process (I've installed a new video card before), or is it complex? Does it require certain specifications in order to "work" with a given processor/motherboard?

To me, the PC to TV method seems ideal, but my results have not been encouraging when trying to get the PC media to show up on my television.

I realize this post is disjointed and covers multiple methods. Ultimately, I want to transfer this motorsport media (many of which is ripped from DVDs) to actual DVDs so that I can store them for use at a later time. I am trying to find the most convienent, and reasonably priced, method for achieving this.

I checked the cost of DVD burners on Newegg, and they are reasonably priced, but I am skeptical of the installation and whether my PC can accomodate the drive, and successfully burn DVDs.

I'd greatly appreciate any and all feedback from anyone familiar with any aspect of my post.

Below I have included a picture of the cable that came with my video card. One end plugs into the video card itself, and the other end appears to be ready to receive the yellow of the red, white, yellow cables that are common among visual media, as I said above.

At this point, the DVD burner connected to my TV is a more recent, and higher quality, piece of equipment, and my computer is slowly becoming a dinosaur. If I can get the media to show up on my TV, I would consider that to be the ideal means. But I am certainly open to either idea, and would greatly appreciate help in any form.

Thanks!

it will take FOREVER to encode a DVD on that machine... of course forever isn't all that big a deal if you start it when you go to work or go to bed... but if you're going to wait for it... it will be hours.

Gotcha, this is the sort of information I was looking for.

Knowing that, I will try to get the PC media to TV method to work. My TV DVD burner is nice, I just have to find out how to get the signal from my PC to my TV.

I tried going into the monitor preferences in Control Panel, but for whatever reason, the TV does not show up, and it seems that the software/options doesn't allow for it to be a selection.

I found a good site just now regarding this.. The first, regarding physical connection HERE and the second regarding the software connection (this is where I am having trouble) HERE.

My main concern is that I am not even seeing the screens and options available in these tutorials (I've seen the same screens in other walkthroughs). Specifically, I don't see a TV option, nor do I see a "Clone" tab. I gather this is the main obstacle between getting the PC set-up for showing media on TV.

Is anyone familiar with this, and have ideas at why I am encountering these problems?

it's not your monitor, its your display adapter, what kind of video card do you have?

It's a ASUS Radeon 7000 (64 MB).

The card works fine on my PC, it's just getting the signal to my television that is the problem. When I go into Display options, I am not seeing any of the options that are present in the tutorials linked by me above.

right click on the desktop, select properties, then the settings tab, its in here, you may have to force the tv detection when you are using the dvd burner. i have an nvidia card so i can't walk you through any more.

I've gone through that process and unfortunately the options and screens presented to me are much more basic, and there are no listed tabs for cloning (for instance), nor is there the ability to even see my TV being listed, let alone select it. The screens I see are very basic, default-Windows esque, whereas the screens shown in the tutorials look more like software that allows much more customization, etc.

I appreciate the reply and help. This is mildly frustrating to me because the video card has TV out, and the appropriate cable, but it feels like the software is limiting my ability to use the hardware.

You should re-install the driver's for the video-card. It sounds as if you should have options which aren't present. use the cd that came with the card or you can search for the driver using google. http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

also installing a drive is pretty simple. you simply need to connect the power and a data connection to the motherboard. i'm sure the computer experts in the computer forum could answer this better, but since you have (i'm assuming) a dvd player, you would just turn off your computer, unplug the dvd player, put the dvd burner in its place and connect the burner as the player was previously connected. turn on the computer and install the driver using the cd.
