Firefox doesnt like the Intranet
I have Firefox version 1.5.0.8 running on my WinXP SP2 PC. For some reason it won't display the home page (or any other page) of our company's Intranet.
I've imported all the settings from IE6 - with which I can view the site - and still no joy. I've manually checked the proxy settings and the exceptions list to make sure that they match and they do. Strangely, I have the IE Tab extension installed so that I can switch from FF to IE and when I do, it works! I know it's probably something really simple (at least I hope so) and I'll kick myself for not figuring it out myself. Any ideas?

It's very possible that the site simply won't work in something other than IE. I'm not sure what kind of a company you work for, but it's not unheard of for Intranet sites to be 100% browser specific. Sometimes companies just shut out other browsers to save money and then tell their employees to use IE.
At least that's what my company does. It *could* be a fixable issue, but without delving deeper into how the site works and is designed, I don't think there's really a way to find out.

Moskie, I suspected as much. It's not that much of a schlep to get it to work in FF now that I have the IE extension.
Maybe I should install FF 2.0.

Company intranets are usually written by incompetent staff using MS Word or Frontpage. They rarely work unless you have the standard office Windows desktop including IE. Take my word for it, I've been on over 15 corporate sites as an IT contractor - what you see is normal.
In fact, it's fairly common for an IT team (contractors) to get a student, intern or token female with no experience - and for them to subsequently be given the harmless job of building a project web-page. I've never seen that task completed however. |
