Disk defragmenter

I haven't run a disk defragmenter on my computer yet and I think it is due for one. Problem is, when I try to run one, it takes hours for it to get to 9-10%, and doesn't really progress from there. I use the standard program that comes with windows, so I don't think that's the problem. I think that I have waited too long to run it and now I am S.O.L. Any suggestions on what I should try?

A full defrag on a cluttered system can take a very long time to complete. I suggest letting it run overnight. There are also much better defrag apps out there that are reasonably priced, such as DiskKeeper and the like. They do a much better job of cleaning up and optimizing your disk, as well as checking for and fixing errors to prevent disk failure.

it also matters how much free space you have on your drive, if you dont have much space to move files to, it takes longer

Programs and services running in the background will also cause defrag to run slow and possibly restart.

1. Free up space before running Defragmenter. Clean out the recycle bin and use Disk Cleanup or download CrapCleaner and use that to your advantage.
2. Run Defrag in safe mode overnight to reduce # of services running
3. If you still have problems, type this into the command prompt:

Code:
chkdsk c: /r
When it asks to schedule on reboot, press Y and then reboot and allow the disk to be checked. This exercise will probably take an overnight run.

i use diskeeper and it runs automatically every other day.
awesome program.

and the more you defrag, the less time it takes (obviously)
just make sure you have alot of available space and leave it on overnight, as someone said before.

just wondering btw,
how big is your hard drive and how much available space do you have?

another vote for diskkeeper...scheduled defrags, defragging of page file and mft are very helpful.

use crapcleaner or atf cleaner to clean out the garbage.

Add another vote for diskeeper. Also, be sure to turn off any anti-virus software you have running. It takes forever if you have real-time protection turned on.

15-20% free space is a must as well
