Two speakers for my TV.
 

I'm looking for a pair of decent speakers for the TV in my room. Subwoofer would be nice, but isn't required as long as the speakers provide decent sound. I live in the apartment so neighbors are an issue. Something very inexpensive would be great. Perhaps under $150?

Unless you spend a lot of dough on speakers you're going to be hard pressed to find a set that work well without a subwoofer anymore. Everyone wants the tiny little cube speakers these days and personally I think that's sad. I'll put my "old-fashioned" wood tower speakers up against just about anything out there. Just like with cars, in speakers there's no replacement for displacement. That air chamber makes the sound so much better.

The thing is that I only got one room to myself. I live with my parents. If it was a living room, I would get a 5.1 set-up without hesitation. I really doubt that putting a 5.1 set-up in a 13x11 room would be practical. I already have a 4.1 speaker set for my computer and I can't turn it up too loud.

I agree with you shakran. I would definitely prefer to have a pair of wooden floor standing speakers. Problem is that I have no room and I got neighbors and parents. So it's the little cube ones for me until I get my own place.

I think I found a set that I like. It's 2 speakers that mimic surround sound. The ones I posted in the original post just add some definition to it without actually having the decoders

I think you misunderstood - you don't HAVE to get the towers to get GOOD sound (but they help a lot). What I meant was, if you don't get the big speakers, you MUST get a subwoofer or your bass will suffer bigtime.

Yup, what he said. Plus, the little speakers you can hang on the wall, and the 5.1 system will offer a much better sound stage than a 2.1 with simulated surround. It's not just for volume, but effect.

Isn't the point of getting a home theatre system to be immersed in the movie/game/TV? Like I said, I have a 13x11 room, so I'm concerned that going with full blown 5.1 might be overkill for such a small space. The 2.1 focuses on bouncing sound from the walls. Since I have a small room, it shouldn't have a problem simulating surround. Especially since I don't know what a movie in 5.1 is supposed to sound like in the first place (I only had one watched with an old Sony 5-speaker stereo system hooked up to the TV with Dolby Pro Logic II enabled).

I would definitely go with a 5.1 system, or even a 7.1 if I had my own place. My parents don't even want me to get a system with a subwoofer, cause that's all they would hear in their room. Are there really that few choices for a decent 2.1 system? I found some Bose and Sony 2.1 Simulated Surround speakers, but they are $1300 and $750 respectively. Waaaaaaaaaay over my budget.

They've been getting pretty good reviews, have all the decoders needed for movies and are 5.1.

Does anyone have any experience with this set?
