Hi-Speed USB Problems?!?! :mad: - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

OK folks, I have had it with this laptop. Its a Sony VAIO (not that it matters), but I just recently had to replace the hard drive and original equipment. This is no problem and everything is back to working normal. I have 99% of my info on an external hard drive so nothing was lost but the OS. Now that everything is back to normal when I plug my external hard drive in I get the dreaded "A HI-SPEED USB device is plugged into a non-HI-SPEED USB hub." message. These usb hubs are high speed but obviously it didn't load these right. I have tried everything I know to do to change these but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

make sure you've installed any specifc Sony VAIO drivers from the Sony VAIO website.

I'm in the process of rebuilding a HP Pavillion ze4600 and have to get all the specific drivers for the machine from HP. It's a pain and a drag, but it's what needs to be done to get all the functionality from the machine as it was from the day it was first taken out of the box.

what model is your VAIO? are you sure the 2.0 is where you are plugging it in? One one VAIO I was working on just 1 of the 3 USB ports were 2.0.

cynthetiq is most likely right, USB will detect as 1.1 unless the drivers for 2.0 are installed, most 2.0 drivers are included in SP1, but not all of them, especially specialty drivers such as for laptops.

Its a Sony Vaio PCG-FX220 it only has 2 USB ports on the back. They are both 2.0. Like I said before I wasn't having this problem before so hopefully it is a driver problem. I am running SP2 right now and I figured it would get all the right drivers and so forth but i guess not. I will try that today when I get home. Thanks for the heads-up on this!

I don't see any specific USB drivers in the sony.com support site, for WinXP. But these were all the drivers listed for your model.

You can't get USB drivers from the manufacturer, for some reason they are ALL supplied by Microsoft (I think it has something to do with the interaction between the driver and the HAL and that USB is a true standard that they can mandate compliance for :P ).

Anyway, the point is that you'll want to try going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and making sure that all of your critical updates are installed, especially Service Pack 2. You might also want to check that you're running DirectX 9.0c (Start > Run > dxdiag should launch the info utility) and see if perhaps there are any additional optional hardware driver downloads
