My brother wants an Ipod for under 200 bucks but the catch is now they stopped selling the 20 GB ipods which is all he really wants/needs. We found one on the Apple Website but it's refurbished. So the real question is What does refurbished entail. WIll it be sctracted, cause he can deal with that, he doesn't want a broken screen or a product that will die after a couple of months.

I have a refurbished printer on my desk that I've been using for five years with no problems. I had an HP Jornada that was a refurb and I used the hell out of it. When I got it from HP it was packaged just like the new one I bought for my wife and worked every bit as well.

I suspect most refurbs are returns from people who just didn't like their purchase or couldn't figure out how to use them in the first place.

I'm a big fan of refurb equipment.

Okay, maybe it was broken once, but it had an actual technician's actual hands on it. A real live person ensured that the device worked, which is more than you can say for a factory unit that rolled off the line and straight into a box.

I've had lots of refurb devices in my day, and they've all worked great. IMO, refurbs are the best kept secret in the electronics industry.

I pretty much concur with the other opinions'. There are some items I will not buy refurbished, like hard drives or RAM. Those items are just too critical.

Oh, absolutely. I've never seen refurbed HDs or RAM for sale.. I think I'd be a little shocked to see somebody refurbing and reselling those. Once a HD or stick of RAM goes bad, it's bad, and its proper home is the dumpster.

I'm actually sort of in this same quandary. lurkette's birthday is coming up and she's in serious need of an iPoddish device (she's using my ancient 20GB Archos Jukebox, whose HD is failing). On one hand, I sort of hate to get her an actual iPod when there are other devices out there with richer feature sets and that aren't the freaking Big Mac of the DAP world. On the other hand... there's a reason everybody eats Big Macs. And the availability of refurb iPods takes the price issue out of the equasion. The other thing is, she'll be way happier using iTunes than Windows Media to manage data on the thing. I can't find any current models that mount as a USB Mass Storage Device anymore. I guess DRM has won...

What are you trying to do with the USB MSD connection? Store random data files, or transfer songs? There are solutions for either question.

It's a better deal if it comes with a warranty cause you never know whats gonna happen. I bought my refurbed iriver from ebay and it came with a 3 month warranty. It was fully functional and had no deflects or blemishes but I had to reset it a couple times cause it froze (I was pressing the buttons too fast).

I just don't like having to use iTunes as a syncing mechanism. She's been using a device that mounts like a hard drive and gets its content copied to it in Explorer--and then navigates on-device by way of its directory structure. Syncing with iTunes or WMP and then using the tag-based navigation on-device is a completely different way to think of it.

All refurbished iPods come with 90 days of free tech support and a 1-year limited warranty.

Yes, but so does anything else that uses a rechargeable battery. They all die eventually. Ipod batteries are easy to come by, and should be fairly easy to replace.

My guess is that it has had a new battery fitted. The batteries have a life span and they are not replaceable (by the everyday battery user). When the battery goes flat they give a $40 refund on a new Ipod. My guess is that it is somoene elses flat battery.
