can't log on to windows
 

One of my computers at work is running on windows 2000 and all of a sudden won't let me log on.

It worked fine until everything was taken out of the office and then moved back in. I can't log on with the administrator password or any of the user passwords. What is frustrating is that for some reason I can't view which domain to log on to (I want to log on to the network and not the computer) but I'm not given that option (even though the error message says to check the user name and domain). Is there a way around this aside from creating a disk to hack the administrator password?

Check the network connection - nic, cable, port, etc. If you've moved office, the port you're plugging into might not have been patched in. The move may also have unseated the nic. No network card would prevent you from logging onto the network.

Might pay to have a chat with your network admin.

Yea sounds like you are trying to log into a domain that isn't accessible.

Have you hidden the "log on to" window? I think "options" button hides/reveals the domain/workstation log on option.

Also if the machine was removed from your domain prior to the move that option would no longer appear.

When I click the "options" button it will hide/reveal a box to check - "log on using dial up connection" So there's no option to even select a network.

I'll check the nic card and switch ports too. There are several in that office. Thanks.

Sounds like this machine has been removed from the network and you would need to know the admin password for the machine in order to be able to log into it again.

can you try changing the domain with your username? with a stevo@domain.com? i'd also switch a computer that is connected over to the port and verify that.

I work in a large domain environment, sometimes for no reason, our systems are disassociated from the domain with no reason, try joining a workgroup, reset, and rejoin the domain.

I've had this happen previously, and used this tool available from this site http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ can be quite daunting to use but works well. It allows you to reset any local user accounts including the admin account. should allow you to log on locally, and add to the domain.

after rereading your post one mor ething comes to mind, to log onto a domain you can also type the domain\usename in the username box.

I tried that, dilbert. nothing. tried plugging into every port in the room, nothing. Had the tech guy come in with a disk to crack the windows password, nothing. Gave the tech guy the computer to take with him and work on it at his office. We'll see.

Why'd they move you out and back?

First thing, as NotAnAlias suggested, check those wall jacks. If there's no network in your office then other efforts are somewhat wasted. Even if the tech returns with your "fixed" system you could be back where you started.

Of course someone must have done this already. I just can't see it in the thread.

We had the offices painted.

My computer in my office is fine, but in another office I have 3 computers\workstations set up. Two of them were back online as soon as they were hooked up, so the network connection in the room seems to be working fine. Its just that one PC that won't let me log on. At this point its in the tech's hands, I'll let you know if I find out how it was fixed.

dumb question, did you try the port the bad computer was plugged into on a working computer?

that I did not try...once I had a working computer, I let it be.

check the port that does not work, maybe they got some paint into it.

Try typing in "administrator" for username and pasword and see if it works
