VIdeo Problems (previously heatsink, now software)
 

So I was working on building a computer, I put the CPU in, the fan was already attached to teh heatsink and I went about instalilng the fan/heatsink, it has those clips on the side that attach to little tabs on the side of where teh cpu sits, so I was trying to get those in, it was a little difficult I was bending the clips when it broke....i tried soldering it back together but i'm just as good as that as I am putting a heatsink on. so, if anyone has any ideas i'd appreciate it, anything from where to fidn a replacement clip to how to fix this one, to alternative methods of attachment. thanks

So a new heatsink went in and worked great, apparently the key is using a philips screwdriver, all the devices are working after I loaded the drivers from the mobo CD [thanks jinnkai].

The new problem I have is when I'm on the internet, when I scroll down on a page, it takes forever [this is a loaded page i'm talking about]. What happens is that it changes the image at the top and works its way down until the whole screen has been displaced by the amount of the scroll, if that isn't clear someone let me know.

So I changed the theme for the computer and this problem went away, don't know what the deal was, but thanks to everyone who helped out.

heatsinks and fans are so cheap nowadays I would just purchase a new one, honestly. the last thing you want is a johnny-rigged heatsink flying out of the socket and causing a cataclysmic computer catastrophe.

yeah, buy a new one, you can get a nice one for about $40, a decent one for even less. what type of Socket are you using?

this is my first build so i'm interested in the process.

Right now it's definitely jury-rigged, I used nylon thread and wrapped it around the mobo to hold the fan in place, so far so good.

I think if I ever get the computer up and running i'll buy a new heatsink.

It needs the spring tension to make an effective thermal junction. You'll kill the CPU. I wouldn't run it that way for more than a few seconds.

Bargain socket A heatsinks can be had for $dirt. Look around for a discard from someone who's gone to another socket. Talk to techs at local computer repair shops. Really, without a working heatsink you're going backwards.

i'll probably go tomorrow to the comp store and see if they have a heatsink.i'm having trouble booting this computer, it'll go into the BIOS fine. I'm booting from a CD, so I put it first in teh boot order, but then I get a message saying
Booting from Cd:
Nvidia Boot Agent 201.0440
and then it just sits there...i re-checked the cabling, sa'll good and this drive is out of the box, so I can't imagine that its busted, any ideas?

btw, i only have one monitor, and switching it back and forth is becoming a real pain in the ass, any ideas on that front?

Hmmm...now it says it can't read the dsc, it says insert bootable disc and pres enter...any ideas?

the cd is bootable... right?

yup....i'm thinking i should try making a bootable floppy and seeing if that works, but I don't know how to go about that.

it's XP pro...i'm going to give it another try,

and i noticed that indeed the comp is running pretty hot, at around 120 degrees fairenheit and this is only with the BIOS running.

A KVM (Keyboard, video, mouse) switch should fit the bill. 2 computers hooked up to one monitor - switch between the 2 by clicking a button on the switch. Make sure you have the appropriate connections on the switch (usb, ps2, etc.) that matches your k, v, m.

hey powerclown, great idea, when i went to the store for a heatsink I talked about that problem and he suggested the same thing, so I have mine connected and it's a real time-saver. I also attached the new heatsink/fan and I do think it's running a little cooler, but I still have no luck with loading the OS. I think I may not have burned the ISO image correctly, i'm goign to look into this and try again.

It worked! I'm pretty happy. I thought you could just burn an ISO image, but apparently not. I downloaded some software and used that, I put it in and magic. Unfortunately right now the onboard audio isn't working and the onboard video is very sluggish. I was a little unsure when plugging things into the motherboard for the audio, but I don't remember any wirign for the video. I checked the device manager and both had question marks by it as well as the Ethernet an SB bus. Any ideas?

Motherboard CD. The supplied drivers will be far superior to Windows' defaults. That is, if you have the CD still. :)
