Sony Vaio VGN-S28 hard drive upgrade? Possible?
Hi all.
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-S28. The current specs are 1.6ghz Centrino, 1GB Ram, and 60GB HDD. I was reading the specs required for Windows Vista, and it looks like my laptop might struggle a bit on the HDD free space spec. So my question is can I upgrade the size of my HDD? I heard that if you put a bigger one it it might not be able to cope with the increased temperatures? Also... what sizes are available, or will be available early 2007? Or should I just flag the idea and buy a new laptop? Thanks for any comments! Alexander |

Yes you can put a larger hard drive in, but I’m sure the video is lacking as well for all the new prettiness that vista will bring. You may want to hold off and get a new laptop in a year or so, no since upgrading to vista asap.

I see no record of Sony making a VGN-S28 model laptop outside of Taiwan, in which case it is still a VGN-S28TW. Is it possibly a VGN-SZ28 ?
If that is a VGN-SZ28 that is a very current laptop, it has a GeForce Go7400 video card. It would have no problems with Vista, but I only show it as having a 120GB Hard Drive. That is about the biggest you can get in a laptop for any sort of reasonable money. I see no reason you would have to upgrade to put Vista on there. If it is definitely an S-Series, not an SZ-Series, then even their bottom-of-the-line VGN-S150 has an ATI Radeon Mobility 9800 video card. Not as current as the one above, but still well over the Vista requirements. but again, this one has a 60GB hard drive minimum, so I don't see how it won't fit Vista, unless you plan to dual-boot, keeping your existing Windows XP on there. If you REALLY want a bigger hard drive, yes, they are replacable, but it tends to void your warranty if you crack open the case to replace the drive. All laptops use the same 2.5" form factor hard drive. If you go to a site like NewEgg you can find them for cheap. |

Yeah its definitely at S28something. I dont have it here. I bought it New Zealand from Sony New Zealand, but the only place I can find any info on it is Sony Taiwan. I have in the mean time installed Vista Beta on it and it ran well. No problem with the HD space. But the Aero options weren't available. My graphics card must be able to cope with Vista, just not the Aero bit. It's only 64MB. So I guess I will be able to run it fine, I'll just have to wait for Aero until I buy a new Laptop.
Thanks for the advice though! |
